So I finally got around to defragging my drive...

22 freaking hours!

That's how long it took for my computer to defrag itself. Holy crap. I didn't realise it was in such bad shape. Digital audio software seems to be running much more smoothly now.

Holy cow...

Diskeeper is shareware, but it runs so much more smoothly than the Windows Defragmenter, it's amazing. Word is just about ANYTHING works better and faster than Windows' own defrag.

While I'm pushing everything under the sun, I might as well recommend Maxtor's One-Touch Backup External Drive. You wouldn't think doing a backup could make you hard, would you? Once installed, all you do is tap the button and it takes care of the rest, quickly and cleanly. Screw the massive CD-RW library! Never "Copy To..." for backup again!

(Hey, G, keep us posted! Did you work out the bookmark problem?)

Well next time I'll try the Norton's disk utilities defragger and see if it works better. 22 fricken hours was way too long. Then again my drive was really fragmented. The machine is running much more smoothly now. Trying to do any digital audio work on a seriously fragmented machine is almost impossible.

As for Mozilla it's now my default browser. I couldn't transfer the Favorites folder from IE into Mozilla even though I did everything the instructions said. I could transfer each individual bookmark over one at a time. Unfortunately they'd lose their name when I'd do that so I'd have to rename them. I only transfered over the ones I use regularily. If I need the others I'll grab them from IE at that time.

Actually, probably defrag did not take all that time. The problem it there is applications running in the background and that makes defrag stop and start again several times. Next time, try rebooting the computer and running defrag in SAFE MODE. It will be faster!

If that fails, hit the computer with a hammer while chanting the 32 Tibetan mantras of Contemplative Meditation! Works all the time!

I did run the defrag in Safe Mode. It still took that long. The vast majority of the drive seemed to be getting read and rewritten one cluster at a time.

In that case there may be other problems in the hard drive. i recommend you to have backupt of all impotant files, in case the disk fails. May be its nothing, but better safe than sorry.

You might also try setting your swap file to a static size. I believe there's a detailed walkthrough in Symantec's knowledge base, just search for problems running Speed Disk. I did this and I never had the problem with the defrag program starting over again.
