Our Own Private Morrigu (Honor) has finally opened a can of whoop-ass. Damn.

Think about "political correctness" for a moment. Where did the term come from? What does it mean now.

Back in the day it was a mild jab used by Leftists to describe other Leftists who were just a little too fervent. Then the Right got a hold of the term. I remember Time and Newsweek talking about the terrible hold that political correctness had on America. Their proof? The Duke University English Department had a few people with odd views. And bell hooks was a Black woman who wouldn't shut up but insisted on speaking her mind. Excuse me. Am I being too politically correct by saying "Black woman"? Sorry, I meant to say "Uppity Nigger Wench". Fifty years ago nobody would have batted an eye at that. Now it's too "politically incorrect" to say.

The Republican Lie Machine took the bit in its teeth and galloped away. Pretty soon anything that didn't fit a terribly narrow ideology could be dismissed by saying that it was "politically correct". It even gave the apologists for the established order a wonderfully warm feeling. By saying that they were "politically incorrect" they could support their own privilege and still pat themselves on the back for being rebels. Same thing with perfectly good words like "feminist". By the time the Phyllis Schlaflys and Rush Limbaughs got through with it "the remarkable notion that women are people" became an insult that meant shrill, ugly, unhappy, man-hating, un-Christian, child-destroying harpies.

What's so wrong about calling people what they want to be called? Why is it so terrible and so threatening to exchange words which dehumanize people and reinforce the perception that they are inferior for ones without that baggage?

My highschool years (may their name and memory be erased) were spent at a traditional British-style boy's school. Blacks were Spear Chuckers. Jews were Kikes. Chinese were Chops and Chinks. Anyone from the subcontinent was a Paki, and Paki-bashing was looked on as a Good Thing. I won't even talk about the attitudes towards women. And the boys learned. Twenty years afterwards a lot of them still believed that their white skin and Christianity entitled them to whatever the hell they wanted. And most of them still don't treat people who aren't just like them as fully human.

So you've reclaimed the term. Cool. That's an important part of fighting the power.

You realize, of course, that the only reason you have wheelchair accessible anything is because now there are people with handicaps or physical challenges who could use some decent treatment. Back when useless cripples like you were kept away from normal people things were a lot better.

There is powerful magic in words. Some of the Blackest Magic of all is turning people into things. With just a few words I can make the engaging, endearing jackalope disappear and replace her with some gimpy cunt.

The middle class is disappearing and the working class is barely hanging on? Nah. They're just lazy white trash.

See, this is what i was talking about. although, in retrospect, I really should have added a quote and been more clear when i typed, well, everything.

so let's rewind an see where this went off.

this;
me wrote:Political correctness is a cancer on our society, sapping the very humanity from our language and society.
was a joke. which is why the very next thing i typed was;
me wrote:Seriousley though,

you responded to my post with;
you wrote:and all three of those words came from political correctness.

But you sure don't have to argue too hard to get me to agree that it usually goes way too far.

*actually... I know several cripples who like the word "cripple" just fine. But I know a lot of others who'll run over your toes with a wheel chair.

which i agree with.

but it was your reply to Swordsman;
you wrote:Puh-leeeze. I have a cock. It's y'all who are "vaginally deficient".
and this part directed at me;
you wrote:Unless you'd prefer to be a "moron" or an "Idiot" talking about "gimps" and "cripples*", then it's a bit too strident to say all political correctness, or sensitivity driven language is a "cancer".
that i was referring to with;
me wrote:You should really stop taking every little thing people say so damn seriousley and literally.
it was just me being a dick. which i like to do.

everything else in that post was unrelated to this, and was not directed at anyone, just me ranting.

The clever little racial exchange you put forth has nothing to do with "political correctness" and everything to do with the person in it being a combative, over sensitive prick.
that's my point.

"I'm sorry but...", used correctly, is not condescending...
I know, but most of the people who use it at me use it while talking down to me. and not like you are rgiht now, that i don't mind, but with folks like those various assholes who think that Macs are a status symbol, or actualy think it matters that Kirk could kick picard's ass, or that boba Fett would be more than a match for Luke if only he knew the ways of the force. that's what i'm referring to. Not "I'm sorry, but your father died of chronic skeletal failure." but rather "I'm sorry, but the entrprize could totally take out the death star because [retarded technobabble]" or "I'm sorry, but [retarded fanboyism]."

Political Correctness is 100% entirely about showing how people are the same, and minimizing how people are different.
what about hate crime laws? or is that not politically correct, either?

Whoever he is, given how galactically wrong he is in this... tantrum, it's unsurprising that you would so vehemently agree with him.
I said i agreed with him, to what extent i did not say.

just because you agree with one thing someone says doesn't mean you agree with everything that person says. like how i agree with alot of what you said, but still disagree with the rest.

There. You like me better without the political correctness and polite discourse? Bozo.
Yes, yes I do. I respect people who say what they mean, and mean what they say. doesn't matter if i agree with it.
The American dream is to prosper by your chosen means, make your own decisions independent from some asshole in a fancy building. to live, love, and die by your own choices and passions.

... The death star would so own the Enterprise.

[<strike>retarded</strike> technobabble]

Not only is it a moon-sized anti-anything laser, but it's got swarms of fighters and capital ships and medium ships and marines (stormtroopers). The Enterprise couldn't take out the enterprize any more than a correlian corvette could. /pif.

And by the way, Star Trek Enterprise (the seires) decided to steal the death-star idea for its Xindi story arc... slackers

Yeah. Barring the different physics of the two universes, and their effect on FTL travel ("fire photon torpedoes, come to heading 270, warp factor nine! Bitch, I can outrun your lasers!"), it's sending a battle cruiser against the seventh fleet. Complete and total no-brainer. There is that stupid exhaust port, though.
Where does this go?
That's the main exhaust. it goes to the main reactor.
Directly?
Yeah. Of course 'directly'.
That sounds a bit vulnerable, doncha think? Maybe we should put a grate on that or something, huh sparky?
What do you suppose happened when Lord Vader got his hands on the Naval Architect who came up with that brilliant plan?

Image Why... That's the single most crashins OS of all time, talking there. Here's one for you... What did the Apple Tech support guy say to the mac owner? "I hope you've backed up recently, because we're going to reinstall your OS!" I wish that was a joke. Yeah... The rest of the comic was funny, too... But this one panel really blew warm, tickley feathers up my ass. Nothing'll make you hate macs or that one particular stereotypical variety of mac users like working for apple and motorola.

Yeah... I amuse myself by seeing how close I can get the phrase after one loop. (type - english to other language, copy-paste - other language to english) you have to cut out a lot of idiom and subtlety. That was as close as I got with this one. The original text, ICYI, was (as near as I can remember):
Damn you, bastard three thoudand and third man of the sword! (I don't recall what the "bad" in "bad fool" was... I started off saying "Fool of a took!" but that won't translate, of course) the cartoon under the link above smelled of stale dog milk and the urine of five suferes of leprosy and herpies!
I love bablefish.

I love it... I dated a girl with some nice wheels off and on for a few years, and she had some pretty cool tee shirts & buttons pertaining to the subject... The sort of buttons you're unlikely to find for sale anywhere but a con. I would imagine there is absolutely no danger you are unfamiliar with the work of John Callahan...?
to be continued...

I believe he was killed by the emperor by being slowly lowered into a vat of molten copper, his consciousness pulled from his body by said emperor, and put into a clone, where he was killed by flesh-eating beetles, then stuck in another clone... (From book Darksaber :D )

Less than he desereved. Especially considering how many naval servicemen and women were on that station and it's assigned ships.

I'll tell ya... Every once in a while, I get all hot and wet pulling out the Traveller books and playing naval architect... Everything from improved space superiority fighters to leviathan sized superdreadnaughts, and the deck plans, weapon plans, and blueprints that start swimming through my head every time I think of the death stars halfway seriously... To borrow a phrase from a nice Aussie band, Oooh. I touch myself.

Just a few very small points...
Major Maxillary wrote:See, this is what i was talking about.
And that is what I was talking about. How am I so wrong in assuming that every now and then something you say will be similar in at least some passing fashion to what you mean to say?
Major Maxillary wrote:

everything else in that post was unrelated to this, and was not directed at anyone, just me ranting.
Fair enough, I suppose, but when you set out to be a dick, you kind of have to expect people to treat you like one. When you rant, expect people to fire back. When you're wholly wrong in your views and facts in that rant, expect the return fire to be particularly concentrated.
Major Maxillary wrote:
The clever little racial exchange you put forth has nothing to do with "political correctness" and everything to do with the person in it being a combative, over sensitive prick.
that's my point.
But that's not your point... Or, I should say, whatever your intended point, that's not the point you made. You used the exchange as an illustration against "political correctness." It had nothing to do with political correctness.

As to your "I'm sorry" troubles, I think I'd respond. "Your grammar was incorrect in that last sentence. It should have read 'I'm a sorry excuse for a human being. The enterprice could totally... Etc.' You'd still be unfathomably wrong, but at least you'd be well spoken."
Major Maxillary wrote:
Political Correctness is 100% entirely about showing how people are the same, and minimizing how people are different.
what about hate crime laws? or is that not politically correct, either?
Ok... A few points. Ted Nugent is a fucking moron. Hate crime laws have nothing to do with political correctness or underscoring the differences between people.

"But they say you should get punished more for killing a... (let's stay close to home, here) dyke!" You might reply....

No, you don't get punished more for killing a dyke. You get punished more when your only reason for killing her was because she's a dyke.

In other words, it has nothing, really, to do with the victim, and everything to do with the intent, mindset, and dangerousness of the murderer.

They're being punished more because of the cause and manner of execution of the crime... And that's something we've done with homicide for a very, very long time now. You get different circumstances and punishments (or lack thereof) in each of the following situations:
  • You kill someone on accident
  • You kill someone on accident, because you were stupid
  • You kill someone on accident because you were stupid and drunk.
  • You "kill someone" by setting into motion, whether by action or inaction on your part, circumstances or a series of events under which any reasonable person would expect that someone might get killed.
  • You kill someone because you have reason to believe they're immediately going to kill you.
  • You kill someone because you have reason to believe they're immediately going to kill someone else.
  • You kill someone because you see them fucking your wife.
  • You kill someone because you want something they have.
  • You kill someone (or ones) because your sense of socialization is broken and you happen to like hunting human beings
  • You kill someone because they are a representative of lawful authority and they are going to bring you to justice.
The reason we do and should punish hate crimes more severely is because we don't need people walking around free who feel it's ok for them to harass, harm, or kill other people just because they're different, or hold different beliefs.
Major Maxillary wrote:

Wrong.

The two are not mutually exclusive. One need not be insulting, barbaric, or rude in order to be honest and forthright.

Well, those were just two of the times he got killed. He got killed many other times in other, more creative ways over the course of his work for the empire.

Closest I can find on a quick search is this one, though it is probably the wrong side of the relationship from what you're looking for.
