Even if there were a draft, I wouldn't go; for two reasons;
-Pacifist for religious reasons
-Female (and thus exempt from the draft in the US)
I don't judge people who believe differently than I do, necessarily, though. You have your beliefs and I have mine. Actually, the boyfriend was in the navy for all of 8 weeks before bounced because of asthma (sent him to great lakes for boot and he spent most of those 8 weeks in hospital with pneumonia)
BTW; Hi, I'm new. *waves*

Hey! I would say something smart/witty to introduce you, but the odds are I might mess it up, so Ill let someone else do that
Well you are now joining the ranks of seemingly innumerable girls on this forum. Not that I have anything against lesbians, but for Christ's sake I hope we can get more than two heteros here. I DO mean to be blunt here. Let's just get this one out of the way so we can move on, eh?
NO way, no how. I could not do it. I'm really against war... I certainly respect people willing to protect their country... but i am not a fan of how my country goes about the whole attack and spread democracy thing. Whether we were in danger from Iraq or not i'm still not happy with what's going on there. I support the people fighting the war but not the war itself. That's juist how i feel.

Welcome newbie! I'm with you on the pacifism (though more for just opersonal conviction than religious)
I broke up with my last boyfriend because he is now at the naval academy adn planning a military career... and i just couldn';t see myself staying with him and being in that kind of lifestyle4.
And swordsman, i think there are more than two hetero girls here... arent there?
Not interested in losing my hair or taking orders. However, I'll do military scenes with willing subs. Crew cuts on some chicks are abso-fraggin-lutely adorable.
I, too, am adverse to military service ... Not only do I dislike physical exertion, I'm appalled by the notion of taking another human life ... for pay. If my country is attacked, I shall do my best to defend it -- I hope. If someone raises a hand against my family, then as well. But I don't want to receive a paycheck for it ...
Non-pervert. (Title bestowed by ManaUser.)
Deviating from the norm on a forum of the deviant? What does that make me?

I don’t like wars, but the idea of pacifism does not work for me, I think that sometimes you have to fight if; you want to defend yourself that is. Wars to spread democracy feel pointless but a war to defend your country would be the kind I would be willing to join (if there was a draft)

Mwahahaha. Fresh meat!
I mean...welcome. Make yourself at home.

How strict of a definition are we going for on "hetero"? 'Cause I think boys and girls are pretty much equally nifty...

Well from my experience the Artillery would dig a deep hole, put the building in it and then cover it up with dirt. God damn we loved burying stuff.
I have a theory that all actions taken at any level in the military are in the furtherance of putting a hole in something, somewhere. Infantry is an easy example - they go out, dig holes, hide in holes, put holes in people, buildings, vehicles, whatever. Artillery, as Ghastly said, makes big fuckin' holes, defensivly and offensivly. Same with aircraft and ships with their various munitions. Even the clerks - it takes a lot of paperwork to procure all the things it takes to keep soldiers in the field making holes in things. The enlisted make holes, officers decide where they (should in theory) go. The engineering corps make holes during demolition, and put bridges over other holes. It's all about the wholely holy hole.
The American dream is to prosper by your chosen means, make your own decisions independent from some asshole in a fancy building. to live, love, and die by your own choices and passions.
and to tell the British royalty to eat a bag of dicks.

So it IS like that, interesting....
At the lower ranks, I'd be too much of a smartass for my own good. I might even obey my superiors to the letter. But I have the worst poker face, and I'd probably be the acting janitor for the entire base, for looking at people wrong.
At the higher ranks, let's just say I'd be trying too hard to find solutions that are low-casualty on all sides to be particularly effective.
Best case scenario for me in the military would be to stick me in some kind of technical or code-breaking area.
I do have some light asthma - not sure if it's enough to DQ me.
Neal Stevenson (sp?) wrote (through a character) that the military was great at two things: getting stuff from one point to another, and blowing stuff up.
Never been in, don't really want to be in Military per se, would be very interesed in 'Civilian jobs' within military. Degree is in Microbiology. While working towards this in college was offered opportunity to enter a Laboratory program with I think it was Air Force, but passed. I am sure at the very least US has counter germ warfare groups, wouldn't be surprised if we are in violation of our own rules and regulations with a germ warfare groups.

I can live with that. I was in the cavalry but that was actually just a fancy name for Yet Another Infantry Regiment; we haven't had horse cavalry since 1947. So I look at military things from the perspective of an infantry grunt.

We did lots of digging too. Digging of holes is good for your health in so many ways. Spend sweat to save blood.

If - God fobid - there was ever war on the soil of the land which my feet were calling home, I've always pictured myself fighting back in more of a WW2 French-Resistance style, not in uniform. Once again, like others here, I don't function well within regimentation and having my individuality swept aside (however irrelevant it may be during war-time.)
I shall keep myself in oysters for the rest of the week, thank you very much.

We actually just get the engineer corps to come in and dig the big holes that we put the guns and command post in. But that's only if we're planning to stay somewhere for quite some time.
in sweden on paper all men are supposed to do military service. something i wasnt to keen on. since i already knew i was different from everyone else in my desire to be a woman. so had already shaved the legs and such...
so i managed to get out from 16 months in the north of sweden as one of those jokers that wear white chem suits and clean up after bio/chem/nuclear attacks.
instead i got to finish my studdies
and speaking of that.. why on earth did that creepy old guy had to grope your balls? what difference on earth does it make if i have one or two?! or ..hopefully none

They're checking for hernia and tumors.
"It is the difference between the unknown and the unknowable, between science and fantasy - it is a matter of essence. The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Some do bow in that final direction. Others advance upon it. To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three. I may submit to the unknown, but never to the unknowable. The man who bows in that final direction is either a saint or a fool. I have no use for either."
Sadly I've been disqualified due to coeliac disease (can't digest wheat which means I can't eat around 2/3 of the MREs), though I have many friends in the military and my family has a large military tradition (army on the father's side, navy on the mothers). I'm not sure if I'd do well but I think I could cope with military life, I understand that trying to act like an individual all the time gets people killed. I also feel that it's very hard to justify a war morally, but it's very easy to do so pragmatically, and some times morals need to be pushed aside for what's really feasable.
As for a war on American soil... well I'd be ready to fight either as an assistant force to the US military or as a guerilla (not terrorist, I don't plan on attacking civilians any time soon). Not sure if I'd be a great hindrance to the communists/Nazi/zombie forces, but I'd do my best at giving them hell while I was at it.
While it's old news, it came out in the recent Air Force Times this week. Also, this is incomplete since my article goes on to describe in more detail what he'd ask the women to do
Leadership Office head offered Article 15 for alleged misconduct
BY: Nicole Gaudiano, Air Force Times
11/23/2005
Another Air Force general officer has been offered non-judicial punishment for alleged misconduct with women.
Brig. Gen. Richard S. Hassan was removed June 27 from his position as director of the Air Force Senior Leadership Management office in Washington amid allegations he carried out a foot and leg fetish with female subordinates. Sources inside the Air Force said he was offered Article 15 punishment.
As the convening authority in Hassan?s case, Gen. Lance Lord, commander of Air Force Space Command, could have decided to take no action, impose nonjudicial punishment or send Hassan to court-martial.
One source said Hassan accepted the punishment in lieu of a court-martial, and that he is in the process of retiring. He received a letter of reprimand and an order to forfeit an undetermined amount of money, the source said.
Hassan?s attorney, Col. James Sinwell, chief of the Air Force trial defense division, said neither he nor Hassan had any comment.
A spokeswoman for Lord, Maj. Tina Barber-Matthew, declined to comment on the case because the ?administrative process? has not been completed. ?So it would be inappropriate for me to comment until the process has been completed,? she said.
In January, the Air Force?s top military attorney, then-Maj. Gen.Thomas J. Fiscus, was demoted two grades and ordered to retire as a colonel after receiving non-judicial punishment for charges of conduct unbecoming an officer, engaging in unprofessional relationships, fraternization and obstruction of justice for deleting incriminating e-mail files from his DoD computer system.
The decision to give Fiscus non-judicial punishment outraged military lawyers and members of the JAG Corps who had defended lower-ranking clients who faced jail time for similar offenses.
No Air Force general officer has ever been taken to court-martial for any offense.
The Air Force has not provided a copy of the Air Force inspector general?s report on the Hassan case sought under the Freedom of Information Act. But a source said the report included what the IG considered substantiated allegations of conduct unbecoming an officer and unprofessional relationships with three or four women dating back four to five years.
Hassan was reassigned six months after the investigation began on Feb. 1 with a formal complaint from an Air Force member, who said people felt subtle pressures to comply with the general?swishes, the source said.
"Three or four had similar stories about him wanting to rub their feet," the source said.
Since his reassignment in June,Hassan has been working as special assistant to the deputy chief of staff for personnel. Once a final determination is made, the next step after an Article 15 would be for Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne to determine the grade at which Hassan would retire, according to an Air Force spokeswoman.
So.... would he have gotten into trouble if he touched men's feet?
