Where's the libido gone

Post by Lowky »

I have noticed a strange trend lately around here, dealing with thread hijacking. Usually we take innocent threads and relate them to sex, tentacoo wape, sex, and more sex. Lately we seem to be taking threads about buckcake, sex etc. and turning them into threads about language/grammar/reading comprehension or discussions about taxes. Just seems kinda odd.

So Bring on the Tentacles!!!!

Heh, sounds good to me! One thing you can never have too much of is tentacles, hentai or otherwise (but hopefully hentai!)

Before a friend of mine linked me the comic and said "check this out" I was never really into tentacle stuff. But now I have to agree. How's that saying go?

Hmmm, I think you guys aren't thinking far enough outside the infamous "box" (so to speak) - I say, COMBINE THE TAXES AND THE TENTACLES!

Believe me, I'd start enjoying October a hellavalot more if some bright studly tentacle beast did :)
I shall keep myself in oysters for the rest of the week, thank you very much.

Q. What's the difference between taxes and a tentacle monster?

A. One is a hideous monster that simultaneiously uses its various slimy yet inescapable arms to bind, terrify, humiliate, and violate people with over and over again. The other has a schoolgirl fetish.

Anyone else reminded of the "freedom day" episode of Futurama? Nixxon's head talking about how we enjoy the freedoms of earth... "And you're free to spend a weekend with the pain monster if you don't pay your taxes."
It's a shame their depiction of the pain monster didn't have any tentacles.

It's nothing new, it just happens in cycles. I think there's a natural balance on this forum, any thread that starts with sex ends with grammer/taxes/cooking/etc, or at least takes a detour through those subjects before ending with sex, and any conversation not about sex will be tentacle raped. Think of it as intellectual bukkake - everyone wants to leave their mark.

This actually came up on another forum I visit, albeit phrased somewhat differently, where it's called Rillion's Second* Law, after the regular who coined it. "Any thread which begins on a serious subject will become frivolous, and any thread which begins on a frivolous subject will become serious."

*Rillion's First Law is, "The amount of knowledge a person has about a particular subject is inversely proportional to their tendency to makes sweepingly general statements about it."
"In operating system terms, what would you say the legal system is equivalent to?"
"Slow. Buggy. Uses up all allocated resources and still needs more. Windows. Definitely Windows."

Whats the one that goes something like "Any thread is automatically dead when one person compares another to Hitler or the Nazi Party"
Squidflakes, God-Emperor of the Tentacles.
He demands obeisance in the form of oral sex, or he'll put you at the mercy of his tentacles. Even after performing obeisance, you might be on the receiving ends of tentacles anyway. In this case, pray to Sodomiticus to intercede on your behalf.

It's Godwin's Law.
Godwin's law (also Godwin's rule of Nazi analogies) is an adage in Internet culture that was originated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states that:

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.

Although the law does not specifically mention it, there is a tradition in many Usenet newsgroups that once such a comparison is made, the thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. This tradition is more widely known than the original law, and there is some considerable confusion between the two. Godwin's law practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups who follow the tradition.

It is considered poor form to arbitrarily raise such a comparison with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely-recognized codicil that any such deliberate invocation of Godwin's law will be unsuccessful. See Quirk's exception below.
"It is the difference between the unknown and the unknowable, between science and fantasy - it is a matter of essence. The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Some do bow in that final direction. Others advance upon it. To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three. I may submit to the unknown, but never to the unknowable. The man who bows in that final direction is either a saint or a fool. I have no use for either."

Heh ... Maybe someone should compile all of these rules and laws into a single format? ^^ It'd beat Terry Goodkind's rules of wizardry ...

A lot of 'em ended up in the original Hacker's Dictionary, and then the later Urban Dictionary. I am almost ashamed to say that I'm an ancient enough geek to have taken part in the USENET thread that spawned Godwin's Law.

I'm pretty sure that by 1990 news.groups had split into news.admin.groups and assorted other groups. Unfortunately, that's just old enough that both the alta vista and deja news archives are very spotty and may not contain the original posts anymore. Hell, I think that predates the first web browser, Mosaic (when "www" meant "world wide waiting").

Anyway, one of the correllaries to Godwin's law was the prediction that the longer the net existed, the greater the chance that all discussions would contain a comparison to Hitler or Nazis. Thereby rendering the informational content 0.

I think the way Mike originally phrased it was, "The longer a discussion continues on USENET, the closer the probability that someone will compare an opponent to Hitler or the Nazis approaches 1." Which then led to the next conclusions that once Godwins Law =1, the informational content of the thread = 0, and the discussion can be considered finished for all intents and purposes.

And it may have been arch-prankster Kibo Perry who later suggested that given enough time, all threads on USENET would contain references to Hitler and Nazis, rendering the whole net a huge mass of useless data. Or someone from the old talk.bizarre crowd.

I'll ask around. There are still enough of us who were there that someone may actually have the original posts saved off somewhere.

What amazes me is that I've been around long enough to have built my first web page, with graphics, in 94/95 and I've still never taken part in any actual usenet discussion... I did use local BBS's a bit back before that, though.

Not back Jackalope, not too many people around have accounts that close to The Great Renaming. Most folks I know got there acounts right aroud, or post Black September.

I got my first network account in 1985 attached to DEC. 6 months latter my e-mail address changed from ryan.worthington!skippy!dec!ACT!32904!ARPA to ryan.worthington@digital.com.

My first group was after The Renaming saddly. I would have loved to have been on net.sysadmin, but alas, it was alt.sysadmin.recovery

Ok, now who remembers B1FF?
