Help me understand people

Post by Leeloo »

So I went shopping today, and one of the stores had a lot of movies that I wanted. I ended up buying Indianajones 1-4 collection, and Star Trek 2, 3, 4, 6. Anyway, when the girl at the counter saw the Star Trek movies, she asked me if I had seen the new one yet. When I said no, she told me "It's good. It's very good".

My first thoughts were that a girl who likes Star Trek is pretty unusual. But after that, I started wondering if she was just recommending a movie (which is still at the cinema around here, so it's not like she would be able to sell it to me), or she was trying to start at conversation that could lead to more... As she answered a phonecall, and I walked out of the store, I was wondering if I should have said that I would probably wait for it to be out on DVD, because I don't feel like going to the cinema alone, or something like that, to hint that I am single.

Did I just miss a chance to score with a girl with some geek qualities, or am I reading way too much into things? She was kinda cute.

Maybe she was just making small talk. It gets boring in retail.

I would tend to agree with Aeridus on this one.

Then again, if it was me in that situation, I'd probably be thinking the same thing as you afterward. I tend to second guess myself and others pretty much every time I have any sort of human interaction.

I always err on the side of "she can't be interested in me unless she's blatant about it". I probably miss out on a lot of potential cues that way, but oh well.

See, I never make a move, I just tell myself later that I should have. Unless I'm drunk, which is a different matter entirely.

So, basically both of you are about as bad at this as I am? :D I think I'll wait for someone who knows a bit more about the female species to post :P

Yeah, after I posted I realized that what I had to say would not actually be of any help to you. Oh well.

I probably know the female species better than anyone else on this forum, having made numerous research-oriented expeditions into at least 12 brothels and having stayed at the Nana Hotel in Bangkok, which is like an 11-floor University of Gynecology.

Also, on a certain Facebook quiz ("How well do you know women?"), I scored 100%, which must count for something.

I agree with Aeridus: she was basically making small-talk. Plenty of women like Star Trek, including most of the women in my family. Although most Trekkies are male (and I remember hearing that one university in the USA had a feminist group that wanted Star Trek posters removed from the Student Union building because they were "patriarchal" and "intimidating to women"), I've known women at my university who liked Star Trek. I personally am not a Trekkie, but I'm guessing that the girl was a university student and probably a member of the local SCA group (and maybe her university's Clubs and Societies office, where the Trekkies generally hang out).

What she said sounded like small talk. I think that women are (whether by nature or culture) more talkative than men and nothing she said indicates that she wanted to know you better. It's really only in movies that small talk like that leads to something.

Anyway, I thought you were a girl?

I agree with Vedius Pollio and others. I would probably make such a comment.

Now, whether she was or was not being flirty is unclear. But it sounded like what you were asking in the first post was whether you missed an opportunity at a relationship with someone like minded. Which could be true- maybe y'all could have a fine old time, but this is the only thing you know that you have in common. Suppose she really doesn't like anything else, you know? I mean, it's all speculation. And when you make speculation, you make a speck out of u, and some guy named lation. If you want to be really brazen and ballsy you could go back to the store and ask her out anyway. You never know. But, I would say to let this pass, as there are many fish in the sea as well as some other creatures, so if you find your Geek Goddess, you will know.

I'm bad at actually making a point, aren't I? Meh...

I would expect e.g. Lulu or Goddessmisca to know more on that subject :P

Well, then I guess I don't have anything to worry about.
It's really only in movies that small talk like that leads to something.
Really? And here I thought one of the major reasons that I don't have a lot of luck with girls, is that I don't do small talk. Want to discuss the advantages of processes over threads, fine. But the weather? It's either good or it's bad. End of diskussion.
Anyway, I thought you were a girl?
Thank you :P

you beat me to it :?P

Now, I'd say chances are it was small talk, a flirtatious comment would have been more like "I've heard it was really good and can't wait to see it!" and if she was a general startrek buff I'd expect something like--"Kirk or Picard?" OR "X episode has always been my favorite but the movies are awesome". And with a comment like that if she was kinda quiet and smiley I'd say it was meant flirtatiously; but if it was not softspoken and flippant it would likely be small talk. --And THAT is because nerdy girls tend to be shyer in their flirts but some times people just love to talk about the shit they love.

You're probably right. I guess it was just a case of "wait, a girl is talking to me? voluntarily? I don't know anything about this situation" :(

It's still quite unusual (for me at least) that a person working in a store spends time on not work related talk.
