Disney Classics

Post by Vedius Pollio »

Found this:

http://www.fiction.net/tidbits/etc/disney_classics.html

What are the most un-Disney works of literature that deserve to be turned into animated films?

My choices:

Disney's "Justine"
Disney's "Confessions of an English Opium Eater"
Disney's "Leviathan" (solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and CUTE!)
Disney's "Caligula"
that Michel Houllebecq novel about the Muslim-hating French existentialist who comes to Pattaya beach
Disney's "Othello"
Disney's "Rigoletto"
Disney's "The Pit and the Pendulum"
Disney's "L'homme qui rit" (they already did Hugo's Notre-Dame, so why not another of his novels; the one whose main character inspired DC comics to create the Joker)
Disney's "The Opening of Misty Beethoven"
Disney's "The World According to Garp"
"Leopards invade the temple and drink the wine from the chalices; this happens suddenly; in the end it was forseen that this would happen and it is incorporated into the liturgy."

Disney's Oidipius Rex
Disney's Finnegans Wake
Disney's Day of the Locust
Disney's Lord of the Flies
The gospel preacher, the hostile teacher/The face of God with an impostor's features
This is the prophecy - the cult leader/The people's temple, the holy ground, the war compound
Four-pound to rifles, disciples, the holy idles/Supreme truth, the cult leader with the green tooth
The multi-millionaire with a stare that can freeze troops/I program people to kill
The motiviational speaker, my words cause people to feel/It's mind control, let the cult leader guide your soul
Open up your eyes to the lies he told/The general, the chief, I be the political pioneer
The cult leader, you can believe in me, I am here/Bless the children, take you under my wing, shelter
Helter Skelter, this is it, you can't kill me I'll exist forever. Cult Leader!

Gotta love the original versions of those tales. :D Rumpelstiltskin = dildo, perhaps?

Disney's Lord of the Flies
I'm imagining Pumba's head on a pole.
I shall keep myself in oysters for the rest of the week, thank you very much.

But Disney is very multi-faceted. It's hard to tell, from watching Hunchback or Hercules, if those works had a single coherent audience. I would argue no.

On one hand:
they're silly, and contain a lot of jokes that adults simply wouldn't laugh at.

On the other hand:
they contain Shakespeare references (a gargoyle in Hunchback asks "if you chip us, do we not flake?", parodying Shylock)
they have a LOT of adult themes (racism in Pocahontas, rape and torture in Hunchback, murder in EVERY FUCKING DISNEY MOVIE MADE BEFORE 2000)
the dialogue has a lot of Latinate words that a child would not understand (at least the same child that McDonalds was trying to ply with its Happy Meals, the ones that came with the Hunchback, Esmeralda, Frollo, and some fourth character). Worthless plastic thimbles and words like "abomination" and "licentious" were not intended for the same customer.

Sure, you might add that they're meant for multiple audiences, but there's no single type of humor in a Disney movie. There's just an assortment of adult jokes (some of which are very sophisticated) and kid jokes. Then again, perhaps there isn't such a thing as a general audience joke...

That is one of the reasons i can still watch and enjoy several Disney cartoons (ignoring most of the new stuff). While some of it is rather juvenile and just plain dumb, there seems to be overarching themes that i still find interesting.

Then again, if Disney turned Naked Lunch (or Junky) into a cartoon for children, they would probably keep to the spirit of the original more than David Cronenberg.

Oh, didn't actually read the article. It was good. My favourite was the Animal Farm one. Godot was also awesome.

So, Disney's Lord fo the Flies:
A ethnically diverse group of kids go sailing together, and land on an island with a small tribe, but fall into argument after one of the kids refuses to eat the pork the islanders offers them. The non-pork eating kid stockpiles fruit, but the next morning, wakes up and sees them covered in flies, and joins back with the others, who then sail back to mainland.

Disney's Story Of O...
The cult leader, you can believe in me, I am here/Bless the children, take you under my wing, shelter

good one.

i was thinking that Disney's Exit to Eden might be interesting. But should include the voice of Robin Williams somewhere, heck, i'd say that they should find a way to include Robin Williams in all of their movies.

This one is actually a pretty legitimate idea:

Disney should do a film about Queen Suriyothai. They already did Mulan and Pocahontas :)

I'd like to see Disney's take on Ed Gein.
It is very dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
