SNB10 Live at the Corktown

Post by Ghastly »

Here's some pictures from the Corktown show where we opened for Carole Pope. Monica's husband Joe took the pictures.

Image

Nice shot of Pete, Monica, and I on stage. Unfortunately as is always the case whenever there's a really good photo of the band playing live, our drummer Dave is nowhere to be seen.

Image

If I had only taken one step back and Monica was better illuminated this could have been a really good shot too.

Image

A nice picture of Monica. Lots of pictures of Monica on my camera. Boy, you'd think Joe had a crush on her or something. Unfortunately most of them are either too dark or out of focus. My camera has a hard time auto focusing in the dark.

Image

Here's a good shot of Monica and Pete. Monica is belting the living crap out of some note Opera Style. It was probably taken during Tentacle Monster or Tune those are two songs where Monica really cuts loose with the Opera Fu (Opera Fu + Punk = )

Image

A rare photo of our elusive drummer Dave. Poor dave. All the shots of him are like those blurry bigfoot photos... him and Elvis sitting together in a Missouri Burger King.

They certainly heard Dave though, and people went freaking nuts during his drum solo in Spy Number Seven. He really freakin' rocked out. I wish we had run a line off the mixer into a digital recorder and made a live recording of the night because that song would have been freaking gold.
Image

And of course, your pal Uncle Ghastly.

The show was pretty good although I heard from some people that the guitar and the keyboards wern't loud enough in the mix, particularily the keyboards. A lot of soundmen don't realize that I'm basically the band's lead guitarist. They assume I take on the typical keyboardist role in a band and just pad some chords in the background so usually we tell them ahead of time to make sure I'm upfront in the mix because I'm the lead. Unfortunately we didn't this time and I appearently got mixed into the basement. Those closer to the stage might have got to hear the keyboards directly from my keyboard amp. Oh well, live and learn, lots of people still came up to us after the show saying they really loved our sound.

One of the coolest moments of the night was when we closed with Tentacle Monsters and I looked out and there were these people sitting at one table singing along with the song! Not just the "tentacle love" bit but the entire song. They knew each and every word so they'd obviously downloaded the song off the webpage. People holding up lighters, cellphones, and even digital camera displays and waving them back and forth during the end of that song was hillarious too.

Nervous... man, I gotta go back to making David Wilcox fuck faces when I'm playing then.

Nope no nervousness here. I haven't suffered stage fright since I was about 12 years old. Had to play piano infront of an audience. I was so nervous I fucked it up big time. The world didn't end, nobody really cared, life went on and it didn't change a thing. Then I realized there's no point in getting stage fright because even if you fuck up it doesn't really mater that much.

I see the Ten Big Space Niggas performed pretty swell. Ghastly, are keyboard guitars harder to play?

On the Corktown's webpage they typed the name of our band as "Big Ten Space Ningas", which kind of looked like "Ten Big Space Niggas" which would be a good name if we were a black Hip Hop group.

For some reason I picture "Big Ten Space Ningas" as a Japanese hip-hop band.

"Morning Ninga!"

"If anyone looking for me, you tell them... Ninga gone fishin'."

Not really significantly different. Nice handy package, don't need a stand, and you can jump around and strike cock-rock poses just like the guitarists do.

awesome story!

yea, sound guys are unbearable if you dont specify exactly what you want, because theyll set you up to standard rock sounds per instrument... Of course, im just stating whats already known! Whats even worse is when you specify what you want, but then they forget! Its so much easier when your band could just adjust the levels on their amps to match and play lol.

nice keytar! rock!

What I hate is when you adjust your levels onstage and then the soundman readjusts them live. Sometimes I think that happens because the soundman purposefully wants you to sound like shit.

The Last Gay Pride show we did the soundman seemed to purposefully want to fuck up our sound. He kept cranking the keyboard way too high and adding way too much bottom end turning it into mush. I kept turning it down and rolling off the bass and he kept cranking it in the mains.

Sounds like some of my St.Patrick's Day in HELL gigs. The sound guys like to turn up the reverb so it sounds like I'm singing in the bottom of a well. And they think flute needs a ton of reverb as well, which means anything with a lot of notes turns into mush. It really pisses me off, since I do sound elsewhere. There's occasionally the temptation to go back and set the board the way I want it, then threaten to break the sound guy's fingers if he messes with my settings.

But only the clueless ones. We've also had some good ones, like the guy at Exotic Erotic Ball. We checked in with him and were polite (hey, we're techies too), so we got a sound check unlike everyone else. And the DJ on the other side of the hall was being obnoxious. I asked the sound guy, "Are they going to turn that crap down before we start?" The guy smirks and says, "Don't worry, I can drown them out." The video we shot that night, you can hear a whole hall full of scantily clad hipsters singing "It's Log!" from Ren and Stimpy along with us, so the sound guy kept his promise to drown out the DJ playing (c)rap music...

I think there's a Far Side cartoon like that.

One of the guys from Assylum Street Spankers put out a solo album called "Faster Than the Speed of Suck." Play fast enough and the suck can't keep up?

Want to really mess with a soundman's head?

Post by C_wire »

Back when I was playing, we told the soundman that one of our friends in the audience would get a headache if we played it earbleadingly loud, so if he could keep it to a reasonable level, that would be nice.

*sigh* Ghastly, if you ever tour west coast, I'll come and give you some truly awesome rockstar photographs.
