No new comic today guys...
I am REALLY sorry about this - Photoshop is WIGGING out on me, and now it seems the whole computer has decided it wants to click on things randomly for no reason - I'm attempting to figure out what the hell is going on with it - will have extra comics up to make up for the lost time.
In the meantime, enjoy the new forum colours? I hope?
And pray to the mighty computer gods that this thing isn't broken....
------------------

*looks around*
As reccomended by Aeire, I am going to make the following announcement.
*clears throught*
I got to preview the comic. Not only the one that has been delayed, but I got a little insight into what is to come. Not much, just enough to debunk most of the speculation that has been made up to this point. What I am trying to say here is that I got to see stuff that you didnt, so there. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/biggrin ... ds*
That is all.
[This message has been edited by FilmBuff (edited 05-19-2001).]
Yah, but you had to watch A Knight's Tale, so all I can feel is pity for you, FilmBuff.

What are you talking about? A Knight's Tale was a good movie! The anachronistic elements were placed in with care, making it feel seemless. Sure, the opening We Will Rock You scene was odd at first, but once it started, it was easy to get into. The humor was on target, especially if you were in the mood for something silly. The jousting sequences themselves were fun as well. Sure, the plot was formulaic in many parts, but it was handled with detail and still retained a good deal of originality. I also felt that it served in some cases as a fun parody of Gladiator. In short, I thought it was a good, fun movie to watch.
Hey, Scrubbo, where are you going? Come back here, Briggand, lest I brain thee!
Do not take your agressions out on Scrubbo, for I doubt he has even been subjected to that shameful movie. He was probably basing his statement on my review or the column in which I bitched out that awful, awful movie. Ah well, to each his own.
Moulin Rouge makes much better use of anachronisms, by the way.

You're fooling yourself if you don't know how to accept the anachronisms. They fit seemlessly into the music, clothing and attitudes of the fictitious Europe that the film portrayed. Even if it is cliched, it's still fun because of the originality of the anachronism use, and the humor that fills the film. I went in to the theater knowing next to nothing about the film, and I was pleasantly surprised at the slick pacing and style that it took the formulaic "sports competition" film in. You're not supposed to take it seriously.
Even the idea that you could put this film on the same level as something as bad as Freddy Got Fingered is an insult to the actors and director. I won't go into any more detail on that front. It speaks for itself. You obviously haven't seen your share of REALLY bad movies.
As for the Nike product placement, it was meant as a joke. Can't you let down your Pompous Shield of Criticism to see that it was simply one of the many witty jokes Helgeland placed in the film? It was more a stab at product placements than anything else.
Why should you insist that he go back to noir-style films, anyway? Not all directors want to be a Hitchcock, recognizable for films of a singular nature.
The point is, what were you expecting? What did you want to see? Did you even give the film a chance before you walked into the theater? I certainly liked what I saw. An enjoyable film for the matinee crowd. Not Dude, Where's My Car.
Whoa whoa whoa boys....chill....*giggle*
Just cause one person doesn't like a movie, or one person DOES like a movie that another person does or doesn't is NO reason to bite people's heads off. *giggle*
Now myself, personally, I don't want to see that particular film, mainly 'cause it reminds me of, I think, EVERY really BAD Renaissance Faire I've been to. *g*
Now be nice. *g*
All I knew going in (I saw it before the marketing started) was that this was a guy who helped create LA Confidential and Payback, two excellent movies. So I admitedly was let down by the knowlege of what Helgeland was capable of much, much better work. I mentioned his noir styles because he has done so well with it in the past. Wanting to explore different stiles is one thing, but there is much to be said for sticking to what you are good at. Dirictors may not all want to be Hitchcock, but they can't all be Stanley Donen either.
I am all for light-hearted fun, but it can be done better. If you want an enjoyable matinee, go see Shrek. there can be fun with some original thought behind it. And if you think the product placement was a joke, ask Nike how much they paid Columbia for it to be there.
Maybe I was also a little bitter because they turned a great writer into a WWF announcer.
However, you enjoyed it, which is great for you. I cannot change your view on this one. I have spent the past five years studying cinema and get paid to write about it, but that doesn't mean you will agree with me every time, if ever. My opinion is not always going to be the popular one, for the same reasons as the best movies don't always make the most money. I suggest you simply find a critic who you do agree with on a regular basis, and read their stuff.
And because I dont want to clog up Aeire's board, I would like to point out that poseur.org has its own message board where you can comment on my writing to your heart's content.
(edit: Sorry, Aeire. Just wanted one more to let folks know the right place to post.)
[This message has been edited by FilmBuff (edited 05-20-2001).]

To end this little conversation:
1. Shrek wasn't out when AKT was released, although I admit that's a great film to see.
2. If you write that Pearl Harbor is a great film, I will hunt you down and kill you for the sake of human evolution. (This last bit was a joke coming from a fellow film student.)

My favorite word is "spectre." Mix the British and American spellings.
But "Zed" just sounds wrong. None of the other letters work that way. "Double-U" is the only other exception, and it's a logical one. But "Zed?" That's ridiculous!
------------------
