Oh, I am mighty surprised. I wait around two weeks then I come back to FMS.. A FILLER?
:: is outraged ::

Hehehe, just kidding Alice. I love the filler, I'm not sure if its an oekaki one or not, but I get to see a cute picture. Just wondering, when will you finally be able to get that new page done?

While I'm anxious to see the next comic, I'm glad that the talented Alice is doing research first. It shows she really cares not only about the readers opinions, but her own growth as an artist. It's always good to challenge oneself.
Anyway, I love FMS, and keep it up!

I'm sorry!!!!! ;;;;;_;;;;; hehe j/k, I just wanted to put something there since, well, halloween is over... ^^;; well I do have a new page for you guys, just check the site tomorrow. ^__~ (still gotta scan and stuff)
Sorry about being slow on the pages, but I meant what I said.. I really do want the fight sequence to look decent. I'm so bad at that! And I'm sitting here looking at the original version and it's SO BAD. there's even a label on it that says "fight sequence that looks so bad it needs a label". Anyway, that's not what I wanted to convey here in the new version! I've already layed out the next few pages (which include the fight) but I want some more pose references before I finish them off. There's a few more pre-fight conversation pages first though, and I'll see if I can get them all up this week. hehe the fight itself is actually pretty short. it IS good to challenge oneself, but I don't want to overdo it. ^_~ Thanks, Bunnie, for the kind words!! <IMG SRC="

Hey, for the fight scenes, what do you use as refrences? It always seems like when I try to draw a fight scene out of my head, everybody looks stiff, there lacks a fluid motion to it. At least that what MY problem is with fighting scenes, not to mention pretty much any dynamic action. I dunno, maybe I should just pop in a Martial Art DVD and put it in freeze frame? Or maybe WWF's greatest hits? Naw... <IMG SRC="

Bunnie, that might be part of your problem...
Even when your drawing from Human action (WWF, Jackie Chan, etc.) You'll also be drawing with the limits of human mobility. And stiff humans give stiff drawings. I recommend you get a nice Spiderman comic. (Anime is also not entirely great at learning action from since they go for stiff powerful "one shots" and thats usually it. If you find a good one for reference let me know!! PLEASE!)
The secret of dynamic figure is to leave a chunk of reality at the door....Exagerate your movements, camera angles and effects of everything in the sequence and you'll be amazed at your results.
When I draw action I like to imagine that all of my characters are made out of a stiff rubber-like substance. Remember that your structure is going to still bend at the joints and not at the bars, but that doesn't mean the bars don't bend or recoil.
As for my choice of camera angles, they still could use work, so I couldn't Really tell you where the best places to put them for action would be. On top of that everyone directs differently, so in the end You've GOT to be you. So the most I could tell you is to don't be afraid of being wild, and don't be afraid of using up a CRAP load of paper on practice.
Now, with the subject of Filler, I wish I COULD make a filler. . .heck I wish I could get my site somewhere other than geocities by this point. Hopefully CEN will be officially moved thanks to Jeiden. I'm also working on a Elfwood gallery that should be up soon.
Anywho that's my two cents.
Jed
PS- if anyone wants to question my knowledge of drawing dynamics, just ask Alice. Her word should be good enough. Or just wait for my site to move and you'll see what I've learned about dynamics.

Yay, many pages to come!! *dances*
Me? Well.. :: in a meek voice :: I just draw. No references. Big explanation for how crappy my work turns out.
Ed, hows that CEN going? I wish you're site could update, I really want to see what happens. *loves Nuuva with dear life*

personally, I like to work from real life, or watch movies, but I don't freeze frame, I just do some gestures from watching stuff in motion. Generally, that's how I get some good poses. Although Jed's way is definately good too, he's waaaaay better at action sequences than me. Exaggeration is definately good, although in my case I can't do it too much, because I actually want the FMS characters to look like they move more humanesque. ^_~
Alice

brain wrinkle -> to start it off - characters face eachother; have it at the edge of a field that meets a dark forest. in the distance either a river or 3 large trees. camera angle start in lower left or right from the back of the defender. the defender could stand at the position of rest - feet shoulderwidth apart, knees slightly bent, shoulders slouced strait down, and hand hanging loosly at the side. the attacker would be at a full sprint
camera shift in 1/4 turns to the front. first move up to waist level ,, attacker starts to build spell in far hand; defender still asumes the position of rest. second movement, shoulder hight, full sideways view - characters on opposite ends of screen, flare getting bigger; defender still at position of rest. third movement, just above head level. attacker's flare stays the same in size but shows refinement; defender either goes to a defensive stance or starts a powerhouse of a spell. last movement, above head, facing defender - the first strikes 3 seen 4 not.
the shift to up and facing forest would get rid of the sky and put the reader in a dark uncertain place. having the defender stand still would portray a great differance in the characters. but dose not have to show one being greater ofr it.
i wrote that in hope that at least one part of it would inspire you. who knows it may sprk something completely different in your head. .it is always hard to start out on something, at least i find it that way. well have fun in how ever you decide to do it. o_

Tanks 4 the advice! As for action scenes, I guess I'll have to stick with a middle ground kind of approach. I think I'll just practice A LOT with real models, and once Im happi with myself I can get crazier and more free. Comic book references are great though, since comic artists tend to bend the rules in certain ways that seem to universally work and look good, why reinvent the wheel and totally invent a new approach?(although completely inventing your own style sounds romantic, doesnt it?) I have a Playstaion magazine subscription, and alot of the cover art is very dynamic, plus they always have and "interview" with the artist showing all of thier prelim sketches wich may be potentially helpful references?
But yea! More FMS! So happy! <IMG SRC="

woo lots of ideas! Wow, mental flux, that's so cool sounding!! ^___^ I like drawing fights between wizards/magicians. Those are fun, I can handle those. ^___^ My problem is that neither of the guys fighting this time are, uh, magically inclined. So it relies mostly on movement and stuff, and it has to look, well, like it makes sense. arrgh. sometimes I wish I'd made Sapheire use a sword, it's so much easier to get references for swords. But then again, if I did, EVERYONE would have swords. I mean, Vaela and Kuthra both do... Arrgh.
Ooh, I was going to put this on another post, but I guess I'll just post it here--our new temporary schedule is EVERY OTHER DAY, or every 2 days. I mean to eventually work back to a DAILY schedule, but right now, it just isn't working. Let me get on a semi-crazy schedule THEN see if I can do daily. ^_~
Ooh Jed has elfwood finally! I shall go and look immediately! ^_~
Alice
