My last job was customer service and "soft" collections for a student loan company. Yes, receiving a call from any company with a bill is bad; yes, I know we call during dinner sometimes. We don't know your eating schedule. But student loans are guaranteed by the government, and trust me -- you'd rather deal with a private company than the government when it comes to late bills.
I had customers yell at me, curse at me, threaten my life, question my legitimacy, ask what I was wearing, tell me to stop chewing gum while I was on the phone with them (I rarely chew gum, and never when I'm on the phone), explain to me how their grandfathers came to this country to avoid exactly the type of harassment I was perpetuating (really? They were receiving legitimate non-soliciting phone calls at a reasonable hour from an American student loan company in Italy in 1932?), and even sing to me.
Yes, sing to me. Specifically, a Russian immigrant sang soem Backstreet Boys to me as part of his explanation for why his bill was late.
I dunt keer khoooooo yooooo arr,
Vhere yooooo frum
Ez lung ez yooo luff me.
(Eh? Vhat yoo tink?)
--Strange/Dave
------------------
