I'm rather surprised to learn that Toom is actually Rivers Cuomo. Sarah being Brian Bell, however, comes as no shock whatsoever... in fact, I'm mostly just glad to see you're finally admitting it openly.

As for emo, if I understand the term, I'd argue that the first full-blown emo album was Elvis Costello's This Year's Model. I say this despite the fact that it was Costello's second album; I suppose you could make a case for My Aim is True, but look at TYM... what does your modern emo band have that it doesn't?

Angst, check. More specifically, rejection by women (who are frequently presented as all-powerful and frightening), subsequent anger, self-doubt, contrast between ability to rock and inability to romance, check. Punk influence, check; more lyrical and compositional complexity and use of melodic hooks than is usual for punk bands, also check. Presentation of lead singer as a nerd, check. In short, down to the Fender Jazzmasters and the Buddy Holly glasses, the two are startingly similar. Forsooth, Elvis Costello is emo!

Or rather, Elvis Costello was emo when he was young. I'd have to say much of his later work is not at all emo.

Or rather rather, emo is Elvis Costello. Rather rather rather, emo is what Elvis Costello was. Well, maybe not generally in terms of quality (though it's no shame to be bested by This Year's Model... and I'd have to say Pinkerton at least manages to avoid embarrassing itself in the comparison...)

...anyway, I'm rambling. Join me next week, when I attempt to prove that Elvis Costello is Elmo. And two weeks from now, for "Elvis Costello invented the hippo!" And...

Damn it, I'm rambling again. That must be some kind of record.
