ok, i assume that everyone has seen the comic for 9-5-02.
in it, Odile uses a spell in Latin.
first person who can translate it into english and pig-latin wins a commissioned color sketch from me.
no hentai or smut requests, ok?
not that i think you guys will ask for that, but just in case.

Rules:
1.) it's the first translation that is the closest to the rhyme i composed in english and gave to Jo for translation.
2.) the english translation must rhyme.
3.) the pig-latin doesn't have to rhyme. that would be pointless since everything ends in "-ay."
4.) you must have a translation in both english and pig-latin! no exceptions.
5.) one entry per person and no going back to tweak your rhymes! you may correct spelling mistakes but that's it.

Contest deadline is 9-26-02!

there are lots of websites and programs that translate lanquages. i suggest for those of you who are not studing latin to try there.

the words are:
"Mala vetusa nocte occultantur
in viso meo apparebunt."
there are horizontal lines above some of the letters, the "o" in "viso" and "meo," and the "a" and "e" in "apparebunt."

Seriously, alive or no, non-physician-type-people don't tend to go out of their way to learn Latin. I know for a fact that the majority of the world is, actually, non-physician-type-people.
So you might want to shorten the deadline.

As I said privately, I think your wording of the rules did it in.
Since you said that the first person to get it right wins and the only three of us that actually responded seem to agree, most people probably think, "What's the use?"

Make it a raffle. Everyone that gets it right will have their names placed in a hat and that will determine the winner. Then just add two additional rules:
1. No one can win twice in a row (so if you win, you're not in the running in the next drawing).
2. Lord Jobe is always out of the running (If I want a pic from you, I'll pester you to draw one.).

All of the pig latin translations were, of course, perfect.

YES, Latin is a dead language. YES, most of you got the main idea. Still, just the amount of effort it takes to <strike>click that mouse</strike> <ins>pick up a dictionary</ins> is worth a nice sketch and a pat on the back. Thanks to everyone who posted!!

I would just like to say that the tense you used on the latin word for "become visible" was future, not imperative, so the correct translation would be "will become", not "become" as a command. Also, the person you used on the latin word was third person, as in "they will become". Therefore, the correct translation would not be "ancient evil", which is singular, but rather "ancient evil things". You used "mala" which can be percieved as having a plural neuter ending, meaning you can translate as "evil things" rather than "evil" which would be a feminine singular ending. The noun has to match the verb, so the correct translation is "ancient evil things will become".
Also, "in viso meo" means "in my sight", which is ablative. It is NOT dative, which would be "to my sight".

As hurredly as that translation was put together, I'm not surprised. Also I posted the original spell (in English) that Kit gave me off the top of my head (probably should have found the page she wrote it on, huh?) I may have remembered what Kit had me translate incorrectly. :-/

Lemme go back and check my notes... You were both so very close, it was really a matter of nit-picky details between your answers.

i don't want anyone to think favoritism or the like, that's why i asked you to judge. (that you're more familiar with latin than i am.)

i think i know where that scrap of paper with the words i originally gave you is...i can search for it tonight.

if it comes down to it, i can draw two sketches if you judge a tie.

Actually, the two entries (not including Lord Jobe's, of course) were very close -- the determining factor was the proximity to the original text that was translated. I didn't realize that I could pick two winners.
