man, i am really begninning to HATE banner ads. if any of you has been surfin ZDNet at all lately, you'll know what I'm talking about. the old standards are being pushed aside in favor of some new ones created by the IAB (Internet Advertising Bureau). They are as follows:
120x600 skyscraper, 72,000 pixels
* 160x600 wide skyscraper, 96,000 pixels
* 180x150 rectangle, 27,000 pixels
* 300x250 medium rectangle, 75,000 pixels
* 336x280 large rectangle, 94,080 pixels
* 240x400 vertical rectangle, 96,000 pixels
* 250x250 square popup, 62,500 pixels
I messed around in photoshop just trying to get a sense of scale of these new banner sizes and man, they are friggin GIANT. giant and annoying. thats right. for a sense of context, go to this page:

as if the smaller banner ads werent annoying enough, now the IAB thinks even BIGGER ones will thrill the consumer. i'm a web designer, and i certainly can appreciate the plight of web based advertising, but do they really think that making the ads even more obnoxious and in your face will be a smart move in the long run? i'm not too sure myself... it may just drive another nail in the coffin of web based advertising if the web browsing public gets fed up with it.
------------------
