Heheheh - weird thread time. Well, I was just wondering - what music, if any, did you listen to while reading through the Jack archives the first time you moseyed on in here.. And if no music at all, what would you have thought would have fit the bill?

Okay - me first, naturally..

Fittingly enough, when I first read through the archives a few days ago, I had the darker recesses of the Hellsing (Appropriate title here, no? It's a great modern-day vampire story anime series) soundtrack.. Best described as low-key jazzy rock with a slightly gothic edge, a slightly 'sad' tone overall, and occasioanlly wandering off into pure surreal, unnerving discord.

Great music - fit the general vibe of the story perfectly IMHO..

The great part was when I reached the 'Silverblues redemption' story arc - as the tides turned, and she remembered the truth..

It then changed to the endings track - a strangely upbeat track, but I figured the lyrics fit it fairly well..

Enough of my ramblings - what do you people think would work best with this comic (comic? Hmmm, maybe 'dark graphic novel') then?

Moby (one of my all time favorites) has made a song called Porcelain, which I think fits nicely with almost anything heavy on emotions, like Jack. R.E.M. (yes yes yes, I know I bring them up fairly often) have a song called Leave which fits so well it's scary with the "Games we play in hell" arc, and I do mean it, sometimes it's like they were written for each other (that's my opinion at least).

Andrew W.K.'s I get wet cd is pretty good jack music. Also, I've been listening to the FFX soundtrack while reading jack. The song "Otherworld" I thought fit the "Musical Holes" scenes and the subsequent "Death by an Angel" scene.

Anssi Kela and Leevi and the Leavings give a good back to the stories like Tet & Trixi and Dinner at Arloest.

All kinds of classic music. Even some of the J William's more lyric tunes

Jaeger got me interested of Rammstein, and I'm fond of few of their songs like engel and spieluhr.

To properly set the scene for Hell, I alternate between the Diablo II Sound Track, and the finest Bluegrass music I can find. If I want to be really authentic I'll add a splash of Barney's Sing o' long. My own screams of anguish really add to the atmosphere!

Yeah, Path vol.2 is a bit more 'agressive' which doesn't really fit the theme. Still, a damn good piece of music.

And I'd also check Apocalyptica's covers of 'Master of Puppets' (better than the original), 'The Unforgiven' (yep, still better than the original) and 'Nothing Else Matters' (well...of course it's better...).

Then there's Blind Guardian. Their newest album (A Night at the Opera) has a song with lyrics that make me think they must have read Jack, at least the Arloest arc ('Under the Ice'), and the older ones have a veritable shitload of compatible material.
The entire 'Nightfall in Middle-Earth' album has a dark, gloomy tone with occasional bright moments, and some songs could just as well be about David Hopkins' characters as about Tolkien's ('Blood Tears' sounds pretty damn hellish to me, 'Curse of Feanor' lets you feel the insanity and 'When Sorrow Sang' could easily be a Jack short).
The album 'Imaginations from the Other Side' works too, with 'Mordred's Song' and 'Script for my Requiem' being the best thematic matches.

Nightwish is another good choice. 'The Kinslayer' is about the Columbine shooting and subsequently fits in rather well with the 'Angry Brian' arc (and, to some extent, with 'All work and no play'), 'Dead Boy's Poem' is haunting, and 'Two for Tragedy' is the saddest thing I've ever heard from a (quasi-)metal band.

Well "The Dark Saga" by Iced Earth definately has a Jack feel to it, despite it being a conceptual album based off Spawn. "Violate" works for Drip so damn well. And if Jack ever slays the horny beast, "Vengence is Mine" could be the background music!

For some odd, odd reason (okay, not so odd) System of a Down's Chop Suey always comes up when I read Jack.

Maybe its the whole 'angel' part

Right now, I got Proclaimers - I would walk 500 Miles playing.

I usually play NIN, Tool, System of a Down, or Slipknot when browsing Jack.

I find The Great Below by NIN especially depressing when reading the Trixi and Tet Arc.

Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is great for the colliseum part of the Silverblue Arc.

Now for a bit of It's the End of the World as we know it by REM... then a little Men at Work followed by Pink Floyd and Phil Collins.

I've noticed that my 'Jack' mindset clicks especially well with the new Futureperfect album, although Empires is by far one of the best works I have ever heard. Mmm. Rubicon...

Empires probably would apply wonderfully to Jack, but I spent most of my time listening to Empires while roleplaying online, so it became bound to my characters [i.e., 'Rubicon' is Alan's song, 'Standing' Franklin's, etc.]

Also makes awesome driving music, especially in the cases of Fearless, Electronaut, and Fragments [just to name three out of a lot. VNV Nation is a very musically diverse... .. well, it's technically just one guy. ]

When I'm home reading it I usually have my Legacy of Kain soundtrack playing o@ Nice n creepy sounding.. then again I usually always having it playing so I guess it wouldn't be *simply* for Jack comics ^_^;

There are myriad selections of music that complement Jack well; it's tough to narrow it down. After much deliberation, here's a list of my personal favorite music to listen to when reading Jack.
-Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Many believe this album describes the trials and journeys of a man through Purgatory, and his redemption at the end. There are truly some unsettling and spooky songs, and the album's theme, IMHO, very appropriately complements that of Jack. The song "Supper's Ready" from Foxtrot is another favorite by Genesis.

-Any NIN (in honor of Mr. Hopkins)
-Any Tool
-Pink Floyd - One of These Days (From Meddle)
-Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel III
In Particular, the song Intruder from this album can almost be Drip's theme song, but the whole album has a dark feel that is excellent accompaniment for reading Jack.

Michael Ezainy alert!

To add another anime soundtrack to the list (Hellsing kicks arse btw, seen only the first five eps), I find a couple of songs off the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack "No disc" fit the show. Live in baghdad provides a good background sound whenever there's a lot of action, and "cats on mars" is a good theme for fnar.
