I think gestalt is, like, a man-made composite entity. In the Red Dwarf episode "Legion" the crew find themselves on an abandoned space station with a masked and incredibly intelligent lifeform called Legion who is a gestalt formed of their four personalities; Lister, Cat, Rimmer and Kryten. As each is made unconscious so Legion regresses until he becomes a clone of Kryten.....
