I want to start by thanking Dave for allowing me this opportunity to ask questions that most of us have probably wondered since we started reading Jack.
By viewing his comics and the images they leave in the mind, one can only wonder what the man behind the scenes creating the comic can be like. His past, his thoughts on the future, his inspiration to create such vivid scenes, and such emotion. Dave has been gracious enough to answer 15 questions I pose to him, about him personally, beyond his drawings. I'm gonna make every question count.
First Id like to start with one that most probably wonder (and arguably the easiest question for me to ask). Especially those of us who read the forums and get to read your posts. Your comic deals with Heaven and Hell, and ultimately those who go to (or currently reside in) either. Can you give us a background on your religious upbringing? What religious study has brought you to your current view and how you, if any at all, bring that out in your comic?

Lets see, born Morman my father was raised by it tho got very little of my fathers take on it because of his involvment in the Army. Tho when he was home we went to church on Sunday and sat in the back pews and listen to the sermon while dad drew Dweeble people on the program. When he wasnt home I got Christianity. The way ma was raised back down south
Having these two different views and noticing they're conflicts not only with each other but within themselves. So I started my own religon that was esentualy christian but with influence from everything I could find, constantly updating it as I went. Basicly it was a set of beliefs that aplied to what I thought on the subject. The idea being "Religon is too important a subject to leave it to some one else to decide for you." Deciding that one of the main problems with orginized religon is that over time, too many cooks spoils the batch. Thats not to say that recognized religon is wrong or bad, I'm saying that its not your only option.
The result is that I feel closser to God (Hmm sounds like a song cue) than I ever have in my life. I seldom go to church but I do recognize they're importance as a gathering place for people with simular intrests. I carry my fathers (He recieved it in Vietnam) Bible in my art bag every where I go, and often look to it.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Dave, excellent response, I can understand that completely.
I'd like to tackle some of the deeper questions before a fun question or two.. so, on to the next question.
Another easy one, that quite a few seem to want to know. How did you vote this last presidential race, if you did, and why? Or more plainly put, what are your views politically; what "party" do you belong to? Feel free to comment on the current state of government from your point of view if you choose.

*fade in from commercial*
And we're back, here on Nukinin King Live. Today we have popular web comic artist David Hopkins, author of the online strip titled Jack.
Dave, welcome welcome. Many of us dream of growing up to be a fireman or cowboy. So, did you always want to be an artist growing up? What was it you aspired to be as a child, and what do you see for your future now as an adult?

First let me apologise to Nukinin for getting to this so late..
And let me apologise to everyone else for turning Nukinin into the next Larry King
"The trick to a good interview is to never ask a yes or no question"
In the last election I voted for the Bush ticket. Because we all enjoy a little bush more than a little gore

Actually because I was unhappy with the last administration, I'm a strong suporter on the ideas Bush ran on School Vauchers, Across the board Tax Decress (Not to be confused with an incress in the minimum wage) Missle defence and rearming the military. I do not think Bush "stole" the election, the rules were in place years before and we don't elect based on the popular vote because if we did polotitions would only cater to citys and other high population areas.
I'm probibly more republican than democrate. I don't agree with the Elefents all the time, and I'm with the Donkeys on things like the right to be homosexual.
I think one of the biggest problems with government right now is its overwillingness to devide us into groups based on ethnisity or history this makes for an unequal population where one side will begin to hate the other. The other big problem is with the trend for some polotitions to be "neutral" You can't be neutral and those that try offten apier spineless and we can't have spineless politics (Especialy now) The other side of that is the trend for everything to be "Even" or "Fair" the system was designed for one side to be able to overpower the other so that we wont have stalemates and mayhap the government might actually get things done.
Boy thats enough I think

Nope I can safely say it was allways about useing art as a story telling tool, once Keenspace is up and at 'em again I should be starting a new comic here showing off all my old stuff.
I cant say that everything I drew was good, had to learn over a long period of time.
If it was ever anything but art it would have been to be a soldier like my father.

Ive seen some of your earlier work Dave, good stuff none-the-less. I couldnt draw a stick figure with a ruler.
Its a given that most of the response youve gotten is about the Tet and Trixi arc. One that moves me nearly to tears every time I read it. So we see the softer side of Jack, and indeed some emotion from the man who creates it. Most of us know of Karma, and your relationship with her. On a more personal note. Tell us how you met, or your favorite memory together. Candle lite and walks along the beach, or gwar concert and thrashing? Tell us something more about this steamy affair. Enquiring minds wanna know.

Oh its a long story involving a balcony and a guitar
Tried to get Katie to respond to this one because I'll just lie to ya, or she'll say I did <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/smile.g ... Esentually it went like this, My first girlfriend broke up with me, shes a great girl wonderfull artist I've got nothing against her. I was extreamly clingy for months affter she called it off. Looking back, I was a moron and couldnt really see that we were good friends but horible as a relationship (I'm sure you can all understand) in any event there was a period of time when I became completely shut off (Again a really stupid thing to do) And this gal asked Karma to check in on me, and thats how we met.
As for my favorite memmory with Katie it'd have to be the first week we spent together, watching everything all click into place and knowing from my mistakes last time, that this wouldnt become a repeat preformance.

Please forgive my terribly long abscence, I work for my local ISP and it was DoS'ed recently, we've been on lock down ever since. As a supervisor, I've been running around like mad trying to keep things together. Sorry Dave, and all those who were following this thread. Just as it was getting interesing..
Moving along, we all know that the keenspot/space community of artists is a small one, and alot of the artists seem pretty closely knits. Who would you say are your favorite artists, and what comics do you read? Online or off, who do you read in your spare time? Comics or otherwise. I'll have another question tomorrow.

Lets see,
Katelles of Kitnakayboodle.keenspace.com
Gene of Genecatlow.com
Kevin of Newshounds.com
Julie Miyamato sgp.keenspace.com/
You all know about Ed
Cameron Floyd http://www.transfur.com/artwork/artist. ... =19&p=1 www.yerf.com/floycame (who to all you potential publishers I'm planing a project with..)
I can't say I'm friends with but I do enjoy the work of Roz Gibson http://www.rozgibson.com/
As for comics, not much has impressed me lately, Stoped reading Spawn when it started staring vampires a couple years back. It really (IMHO) started going down the tubes after #60 when Todd McFarlane started getting rather full of himself.
Jeff Smith's Bone has sort of hit a slump.
Dave Smith's Cerebus is also getting slow, but looks promising.
Of the furry comics I buy most for the art and not the storys (Except maybe Wild Frontier(plug And they're doing the next Ernor without me, but I'll still buy it when it comes out. http://home.attbi.com/~mprints/products.html
(Buy Ernor #6 and make sure the Keith's know your only buying it because I drew part of it
Frank Millers new Dark Knight comic book is what I realy look forward to, I can't wait to see where he takes it. Issue 1 features said caped crusader kicking the shit out of the big 'S'.
Curently I'm reading a collection of Twilight Zone short stories. Katie has just gotten me off a Steven King kick by having me read "Desperation" and "The Shining" after showing me the movie version I fell in love with Jack Nicholson all over again I really enjoyied Huxley's "Brave New World" Not a big reader but thats what I've been reading lately.

hmmmmm floofpi some nutjob at the fair shoved a bible down my throat
ifn't I start writing I'll pry it aprar for ideas names....

BRAVO Dave on formaluating a new religon, I was getting worried, aside from all the heaven/hell stuff Jack is good in my book, then again You focous on the 'other' side and use furs, which no one would ever do if they took there beloved theroylogy literaly.

for the litteral "bible is only truth people" take consideration that the americas and even parts on Europe and south africa, the Orieant and Austrila don't exist, nor do Polar bears because they aren't in the bibel.

(knowlage is bad)

But then again, If I were re-writing 'myths' (to some they were real) but with furs it would be the same with you...but I was never infused with Churchiness, but I'm not evil because I went to the Vatican and didn't blow up (gave me an idea for writeing, "a 'holy' city where non can enter unless premission is given, all who are unclean and 'evil' shall burst into flames apon enterance")mauahahw....I touched holy water and didn't burn

flarlll *shrugs* say you have no conflictions, you love yet slaughter those who aren't kin, you respect yet outlaw other faiths by a death-punishable offence for the 'sinners'

morals are nothing unless you belive in one thing
*cries*
somthing's wrong.

because Witches were made into green ulgly monsters, I can write with all my wrath and what i belive...and make it true.

"no other faith is more devine than the one that i cherish, the one that is mine"

Oh P.S I love it when Hyperfundmentlistchriatains say "I'm Proude to be christain"

*eyes text sly-like"

Pride is a sin, rerember?
*stalks off*
