One thing, though... Why doesn't he know he's not in his own universe?
I mean, wouldn't he at least suspect that messing with the controls of a machine that's designed to transport you between universes might lead to such consequences?

Indulge me. Maybe the transfer was so sudden that he just thought the machine had blown up and knocked him out.
