Supersize strips

Postby Todd Michaels on Mon Apr 30, 2001 8:39 am

Well, I have no idea if everything is working right now. Earlier tonight, it took a friggin' hour for 75 comics to update. I had to fix one thing, and now there are 282 comics in the queue.
So my comic should be up in- oh, a week or so. I really hope this one works.
If the comic is showing up by now, whaddaya think?
------------------

I've got it up now. It looks NICE. Of course, it's still huge. 90+k is kinda nuts for a comic everyday, tho. The giant files are usually reserved for off-days like Sundays. Which isn't to say that I wouldn't wait for it to load anyway, but it's bound to annoy someone. Anyway. it still looks slick.
------------------

Damn work, keeping me from fixing my comics.
DAMN WORK TO HELL!
Anyway, it should be working now, although it's a larger file size than I'm normally happy with. I'm still tinkering with it.
------------------

So is anyone else reading this? Any other opinions?
I got an e-mail that talked about scrolling up & down as well as left & right, but I thought I had it laid out so that you only had to scroll sideways, even at 800X600 resolution. Anyone else having to scroll up and down?
[This message has been edited by Todd Michaels (edited 05-07-2001).]

Hey look! They're big... I didn't see anything wrong with the small ones, but then again, I didn't look so closely. Well I don't!

Big strips cool!
I noticed a bit of pixelation on the cat's face, is that an artifact of trying to reduce palette size? It's rough doing big and full color as far as comic size goes.
The scrolling window is kinda awkward, but since you're trying to keep the whole page from needing scrolling, it's understandable. Incidentally, you can get rid of the verticle scroll bar and hust have the horizontal one if you tweak the code a little bit. (Don't ask me the specifics right now, I don't remember, but do a google search on "html tutorial scroll bars" and you should hit something with a good exlination.)
Have you considered stacking two rows of comics? That would keep it from going off the page horizontally.
And I too, share your pain. Shrinkage sucks!
Anyway, I like the size, it looks slick Todd.
And since I have high speed connectoins, I don't care about the damn file size. ^_^

------------------

So. A little smaller strip, but still large enough to satisfy my idea of what my art should look like. Also, the file sizes are in the 50's and 60's, which I think I can live with.
I haven't received a whole lot of feedback, so I can't tell if the one e-mail I received against horizontal scrolling would be a widely-held opinion.
Once I nail down the format, I can go about updating past strips and continuing new ones at something a little quicker than a snail's pace.
------------------

My resolution is set at 1024x 768 using Internet Explorer 5. I only really need to scroll down a little bit. As a matter of fact the entire comic from top to bottom is visible. But some of the white is hidden by the scrolling.
The thing is, the down scroll bar gives the impression that there is more.
I see what you are saying about the details. I've been having that problem lately as well.
Pauly

I have to admit that I'm not fond of the frame. And I didn't notice anything wrong with the smaller strips. It IS a little akward to have to adjust the comic within the page. And On my browser, I had to scroll up-down and left-right to see the entire comic.
Personally, I think strips always look better when they are shrunken. But that just depends on the person. So do what makes ya happy, Todderino
Pauly
------------------

What browser and version are you using?

quote:
Personally, I think strips always look better when they are shrunken.

I agree that a little reduction "tightens up" the lines, but I think my problem is that I like to draw so large (5.25" x 16") that I was having to reduce the image quite a bit to get it to fit on the screen without scrolling. That killed any detail work I did, and also increased the amount of anti-aliasing (pixels in various shades of grey to smooth out edges)that occurred. This made it hard to get a nice even fill while coloring.
I may keep fiddling with it. Thanks!
------------------

I like the new large-size strips, too, Todd, but I've got to agree with Damonk on some stuff.
My ancient PC and slow modem won't allow me to use Netscape 6, so I had to get it at work (which is why it's taken me so long to respond here). Not that I have a problem with reading comics at work, but I have to do it a little more stealthily that at home.
I don't care for scrolling and frames in general, but I also understand your concerns about drawing size/display size. Part of the reason my own strips have such a lack of detail is because they're only 4x10 when they're drawn. You've come to a decent compromise.
I like.
------------------

thing one: i liked the old size, but the new one's alright
thing two: i don't have NS 6, and don't really want to get it again (i did once, and HATED it), but don't use IE (damn, i'm fussy!) -- so this means that i can't see your comic by the "normal" means anymore...
thing three: you are a genius, todd. an evil one, in fact.
thing four: there is no thing four.
thing five: BRUCE!
thing six: i still love your comic! gimme more!
------------------

Ooooo...Pretty cool. Scrolling is a little akward, but again, if it makes you happier with your art, go for it.
looks around before making reeeaaallllyyyy baaadddd joke
Can I get fires and a coke with that?
runs away
------------------
