UH2 Hiatus: January 26 - March 30

UH2 Hiatus: January 26 - March 30

Postby Allan_ecker on Tue Jan 30, 2007 6:06 pm

I actually had this Hiatus happen near a point that I'd almost call a decent "first act" ending in the UH2 story. If I'd been planning in more detail I might have had the hiatus start right after ASCII leaves, which is about where I think I'll eventually consider "part one" of UH2 to have ended.

If that's part one, I figure there's a total of three or four parts, each about eighteen months wortha updates long. I'm nnnot sure what'll happen once I get the (occasionally epic) storyline told, but part of me is certain that I've got bigger fish to fry, from a comics perspective. So where I go from there is anyone's guess.

In the mean time, please DO stick around, as I'll be showing snapshots of a lot of the ideas I have rattling around in my head for future projects. Who knows? Maybe you'll even see a familiar face or two... :)

... anatomy-defying?

I think I'll take Volair's advice. I probably don't want to know. 8-)

Allan is, like most artists, merely being self-deprecating. "Anatomy-defying" in this context means "poorly proportioned."

I've SEEN his porn. It's GOOD.

...Not that he'd ever show it on this site; for the most part, it's just in a sketchbook.

Incidentially on a wholly ON TOPIC note -ahem- today's update is a set of panel concept art for my current pet project (god there's way too damn many of them) which should be a tidy little space operetta currently under the working title Firefly in Sixty Pages With Bunnies.

The idea was that I wanted to do a story about a certain kind of character in a certain period of the future history of the Unit Zero continuity, but every time I thought of it it turned into Firefly.

So I thought, instead of tiptoeing around Firefly and all its awesomeness, why not just go ahead and be blatantly referential, paying homage to one of my all-time favorite TV shows evar? From there the idea's grown a bit and I am hopeful that it'll read like something closely akin to Firefly rather than an outright rip. Although the captain really IS a lot like Mal...

I somehow got equated to Shepherd Book in my circle of friends. Not that I have any clue how that happened. Though I suppose I can agree to a Special Hell for People who Speak at the Theater.

Today's update was nice and ominous. Even for a quick sketch, I liked the flow and visuals.

The biggest benefit I've gotten out of these "exercises in blind speed" is in sheer composition. Where light and dark go, where people should be in relation to one another, I get all that stuff raw, fast, and unfiltered.

But the results are kinda crap. Expect more polished updates both tuesday and friday, although I can't comment on the strips after that 'cause I haven't drawn 'em yet.

Quoted for Majesty and Wonder:

Book wrote:If you take sexual advantage of that girl, you will burn in a very special part of hell: the place they reserve for child molesters, and people who talk in the theater.

And glorious laterness, as said girl cranks up her evil and feminine wiles:

Mal wrote:Ohhh, I'm going to that special hell...

And, a bit later, the whole audience is wonderously punked as we discover that the whole thing was an excuse to do a Church Lady reference, but because of Book's sheer unbridaled gloriousness, you don't even notice at first:

Inara wrote:You kissed her.

Mal wrote:Hey! She was all... naked... and-- articulate.

Book wrote:Well! Isn't that... SPECIAL.

Oh and today's update is already somewhat dated since I've already done a comic for March 30 when the hiatus ends from pencils done by hand, but inked on the PC.

I guess this is a good a place as any for an answer to the 'why not do UH2 this way question' although I see you already answered it if your work schedule is to be believed :)
Anyhoo why not? I already have enough problems recognising strip characters. This isn't your problem, but I don't remember REAL peoples names, let alone drawings and that makes recognition murder, there's less to tag a face on.
Mke the cartoon less detailed? Besides all the obvious answers, there is the problem of recognising who is talking to/snogging/flying with who..

In case your wondering, it's mainly caused by neuropathy. Sorry? What is? er... half past two...

I think I can come up with an even simpler answer, at that. The reason Allan doesn't crank out UH2 in chicken scratch, is because that's not the level of quality Allan wants in his comic. It's the same reason he stopped U0.
All fear the RP character from the completely private RP ^_^.
Current psuedonym/RP character count: 25
-Adding a touch of sanity, or insanity, where needed to balance the flow. .... Nah, I just like playing devil's advocate ^_^
