Reference Search

Post by Doink »

I'm currently looking for references to improve my drawing. Is the stuff on F-Chan good for that, or is it just good for porn purposes?

Let me turn that question around on you. What's better for learning anatomy, pictures of people fully clothed or pictures of people without clothes?

"Better anatomy through pornography" is a common practice in both the fine- and low-arts community.

I was afraid you were going to say that... :(

...

Just give me the link and let me see for myself.

(P.S. How do they organize their pics? It'd be great if they did it by species.)

http://fchan.hentaiplanet.net/
Fchan is a thread-based system, which often means drawings are organized into species topics, although, uh, position is a factor equally often. They HAVE a clean section, though, for the feint of heart.

The VCL is a very varried art source and could come in handy as well.

I was surprized this site was as good as it is. Some good tips there.

(And of course if you just want to see different images of a kind of animal, there's always Google Image search.)

'Arright Doink, crash course time. . .

Fchan is divided into categories based on gender, the classes are fairly strict, you might find some of the stuff there offensive (more on that in a bit)

/m/ deals purely with male; solo, group, gay, etc.
/f/ deals with females; again, solo, group, lesbian, etc.
/h/ is hermaphodites, starting to get the picture?
/c/ is clean artwork; clothing REQUIRED, generaly the work safe area
/a/ is alternate; fettish type stuff, no gore, watersports or scat
/ah/ is hardcore alternate, all the stuff that isn't allowed in /a/
/flash/ is a mixed bag of animation type stuff, mostly SWF format (there is NO sorting/subdividing here, browse this area at your own risk, sometimes posters will elude as to the content)
/tent/ tentacles, e'nuf said :(
/dis/ is discussions of posted works in the other channels
/req/ is posts for requests of specific pictures, this might prove to be useful for your use although getting an answer is very sporadic.
/ban/ are clean banner works that cycle through on the tops of all the pages (sort of internal advertising)

If you have a news client you might want to look up fur.artwork.artists or fur.artwork.erotica on news.critter.net (this is the server name you enter in your client)

As for finding thing by species, you just have to look at the topic headder in the Fchan channels, thats the best you can do. Also don't download all messages on the newsgroup server unless you have a broadband connection (headers only is recommended), it took my computer 3 hours to sync the 65346 (NOT KIDDING) messages from fur.artwork.artists alone.

EDIT: DANG IT, Allan beat me to it!

Well, I did find some interesting pics (still stuck in the clean section), but I'm screwed if I have to find anything specific by myself. Is there anyone who knows f-chan and can help me? I'm looking for raccoon pics.

You could just make a post and go "I n33dz refs 4 a racc00n pix! Helpz pleez!"

Except, you know, they're actually a buncha grammar nazis over there, so you probably shouldn't ask in badly-formed Leet speak. Other than that they're actually pretty friendly and helpful.

Heh heh heh.

I guess that would work. Micro Fur already has an archive going, and he's volunteered to find some stuff for me. Thanks again, Micro.

MF, why did you not list /s/ for straight?

I'll call it a Freudian slip, I was posting late that night after having been up for the last 36 hours thanks to the new work schedule on the ship.

Micro_fur - I NEVER claimed I was perfect.
