On a related note, Volair, can you give us a ballpark estimate on how many times you explained things before you figured out that some people just don't want to know?

And there's a very good question answered indirectly...

This does not preclude Rick from getting pregnant, however. Can I safely assume that this is also implied, or is Rick, perhaps, curious?

::Ahem:: ::straightens tie::
What have you been up to with the spotlight not on you for such a while? Do you wish you got more comic time? Do you feel desirous of romantic entanglements at all with your friends quickly becoming attached, or are you happy the way you are?

Volair,
I don't know if this is a sore subject (I hope not), but I was curious... we've seen the parents of Rick, Jake, and Saundra, but we never met your own parents? Are you on speaking terms with them? Given your former Spy Status, was it a case of being taken in at an early age?

And Saundra,
Throughout the run of Umlaut House, you had executive power... in some cases dramatic, over the fourth wall, including at least one retcon. In UH2, while we've seen a masterful tour-de-force over the fourth dimension, fourth wall manipulations seem to be something of a minimum. Is this intentional, given UH2 seems to have a more action/adventure scale and story driven plot than its predecessor, which would make fourth wall antics troublesome (especially when already dealing with time travel). Is this at all related to the author's building towards this kind of comic work? Or has this been inherited, along with the position of 'umbraged cast member' by a certain someone who has yet to access it?

Saundra wrote:The fourth wall's been pretty much "caulked over" for the duration of the comic as far as I know. You're pretty much spot on, both about adventure comics being less amenable to fourth wall humor AND in the author's "growing out of" fourth wall humor, at least in this venue.

Back when the original comic was started, the fourth wall started down and popped back up now and then to keep narrative flow going, but we were all basically portrayed as fully aware we were in a comic. As time went on, the fact that the fourth wall was down became used as a frequent source of new jokes and situations. With the high-flying adventure elements being employed in UH2, "mad science related mayhem" has replaced fourth wall humor as the "go to" answer for "okay so NOW what happens..."

The Masked Retriever wrote:Also, I didn't know what I was going to do with Umlaut House when I started it. As a result, I could "ask" the characters what to do next. I was sitting on some SERIOUS writer's block, for example, when the storyline where Cal and Amanda got together popped into my head. This isn't the case with UH2. I've already written most of the ENDING of this story, in fact. The middle, ah, well, that's where a lot of the juicy stuff is anyway...

Dear Masked Retriever:

I was wondering if there was any connection between Dr. Sappho and the following quote from Dune: "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion."

The more I think upon it, the more I feel not, as this was a quote only from the movie and not from the book. But you have slipped such small references in before, so I thought I would ask out of curiousity.

Actually it's a reference to Sappho of Lesbos, because hey, Dr. Sappho's a lesbian.

And I left out a "p" as it turns out.

I misspell more goddamn names...
