Yeah... Lest you think all of America is horribly furry-phobic, a friend of mine wore fox ears and a tail to school the other day, and nobody even really reacted to them. I think she got fewer funny looks than I did for not wearing any shoes.

Heh.. I had this pair of black cat ears I'd wear in my German class, not cuz I'm a furry, rather cuz it stemmed from a joke.. wore them all day the first day I had them on because I missed the day I was SUPPOSED to have them in class, as recompense for my stupidity. Nobody reacted, although that might be because I already walk around wearing like tye dye perpetually.. half my high school thought I was a hippy or something, but I didn't get ribbed for that because we DID have a hippy in our high school. And not a very nice one at that.

Something seems very funny about a not very nice hippy
"Fuck you, save the trees."
I wore pig tails to school on a non uniform day once, I got my share of funny looks, nothing physical though, I think people had learnt that I actually hit back by then. It was all worth it though, when I'd be walking, and see the faces of the guys walking behind me when I look around and they realised I wass a guy.

We had several 'militaristic' hippies, which I think is like, the definition of irony. I was in Cy's school BTW.

Heh. My friend and I wear our tails to school. We got the usual stares and astonished questions, "Is that real?" To which we now just smirk and say nothing. Now however, it seems the charm wore off and we barely get much. ^.^
Tail

I'd give about anything to have a real tail. Not like, a tail cut off an animal and taped to my back, I meant a real live, I can wag and feel this, tail. That would seriously rock.

My ideal physical self I've actually incarnated into a character in the game Zav and I play.
If life was fair, I'd be a lean, 5'10" human male with 3 shades blonder than white hair and a navy blue cat tail.. and the ability to fire large beams of destructive energy at people at will, although I'd settle for just the looks.

No doubt, that's number 1 on my list of things I want but probably can't have.

Two experiments of relevance...
At one point I saw a TV show on some boffins developing a robotic artificial hand for someone who lost theirs in an accident. It was controlled by directly picking up the nerve signals from the skin surface.
At some other point I heard of some study/report that concluded the human brain would be able to rapidly adapt to controlling a new limb with unfamiliar nerve signals.
Conclusion: Scientists say it's possible for humans to have cybernetic tails. (and, no, kevin warwick isn't involved)

All I can say is: I miss my tail dammit!

Bleh, forget a tail. What I would rather have would be a patch of fur on my chest. Human stuff is dull, but covering my chest (Or maybe even my whole toreso ^,^) in proper fur would just rule! It's even possible, because if ears can be grown in a petri dish then so can fur. And once grown, at it would be is a simple skin graft and I'd be fuzzy.

the problem isnt growing the fur, its keeping your body from rejecting the tissue. Skin is the largest organ in the body, larger then the liver, keeping that much tissue from being attacked as forign by the immune system would require virtually shutting it down which would leave one open to all kinds of deseases.

Written by Zavion Srath while at Cyril's Dorm in Hoboken: "I personally wish I naturally had less body hair. It's irritating. I wouldn't mind having total body fur, but, I'd rather have on or the other. Although I personally remove my hair because it'd be a pain in the ass (not litterally though, thank gods..

) although I do trim my beard (and apparentally shave it while blacked out) and keep my hair cut somewhat short (nothing like Allan's buzzcut. I tried a buzz once, but then realised I have a funny shaped head or something. It wasn't pretty.). If the fur somehow had the same registering enzymes as your own skin, your skin wouldn't reject it, theoretically, and you wouldn't have to shut down your immune system for that. Much like some people get pig hearts instead of human hearts in transplants, they've been grown by engineered animals. I personally wouldn't want to kill an animal for its fur though, because it's cosmetic, but maybe you could genetically engineer an animal to grow human like hair or something that doesn't need to be killed for it (like a sheep or something) but I'm not a geneticist and such technology is a far way off. (Oh, if you care to know my personal views on it, I don't think of it as wrong to kill an animal for foodstuffs or to save a life (ie the pig heart or putting down a dangerous animal that is about to kill someone) but I don't think it's right to kill an animal for amusement, and I see something like getting a fur coat or makeup as amusement for this definition. And I know there will be at least someone to disagree with me on this.)

But then, sheep have wool, not fur, I doubt being wooly would be a popular as being furry

To be honest, I'm furry enough, too furry in some places. On a related note, I can now put a pen in my beard and it doesn't fall out.

There is no such thing as
too furry!

The thing there is that's human fur you have there, Max. Not nearly as nice as proper animal stuff is.

Agreement with that point. Although shedding would be a definate downside to the animal fur.

You wouldn't have to kill animals, just use your own tissue with a few codes swapped around so it triggers fur growth. Since it's your own tissue, just altered a little bit, there wouldn't be any problems with immune rejection--or ethical dilemmas.

Also, they're working on bio-synth stuff more and more now, I'm sure they'll eventually be able to work out a purely synthetic, 100% realistic prehensile tail eventually, considering the speed at which the world of medicine is moving. I'm not sure, however, that the world of genetics will ever reach the point where humans can be artificially "crossed" appearance wise with animals, if any of you are after that.. I'm not, I just want the 6th limb.. hehe

Yes, but being completely furry like say a cat, it woud mean a lot more grooming, which I'm too lazy for to be honest.
Plus, I've seen where my cats have to lick themselves, and I'm not that flexible.
