Still waiting on that finale...
I've finally got back my Umlaut House legs for the finale. The buildup that's been spent waiting for this thing has probably ruined the receptive atmosphere and demolished the readership, but I can say that the fans who waited through the sketches are in for a reasonably worthy payoff: around ten or so pages of full-color, full-page Umlaut House comics to round off the series.
Doing the finale is going to teach me how long it takes to do a full-color page. It'll also help me learn the tricks I'll need to do a regular update schedule with full-page comics. I've discovered a few things already. For example, I can sketch comics in advance, fill in the dialog, and then ink, all without including paper in the process. This only saves a little bit of time, but it also means I get to keep my originals in better-than-mint condition. The UHCD will feature these color comics at double their presented resolution.
So, if you've been hanging in for weeks, waiting for some sign of life from the UH crew, hang on just a little longer. Once I'm confident I can lay the whole finale down without delays, the cast will be back for one last hurrah.
And hopefully it'll be reasonably satisfying.

Woo, you'd best make it quick. I read on keenspace's homepage last night that they remove sites that no longer updating with the actual comic.
That's unlikely to happen, especially since they say they "inspect" the sites before removing them, and would see that there are strips to come.
By the way, has anyone else noticed that adverts keep replacing the topic review on the keenspace forums? That's more than annoying.

Waitasecond, WHAT?
As in, if I start putting up a regular comic of a different name, they'll delete my account?
I mean, they have every right to and all since it's free access and everything, but REALLY?
Wait.. I could just call whatever new comic I start "Umlaut House". That which we would call a perverted fox would by any other name get as much strange...
That actually can't be it. Tales of the Questor certainly isn't called "NPC".
So it's regular actual -comics- they want, is it?
I can do that...

I cant say that things will be better if we change; what I can say is that we must change for them to get better

Okay, looks like this is a policy that I can definitely understand. A temporary hiatus like mine probably won't kill the KS site, and switching comics definitely isn't a breech. I don't know how universally "enforced" this policy is, but I'm guessing they're just trying to cut down on the garbage load the servers have to deal with, and that makes good sense. Continuity from me by switching to comics and back to sketches every now and then is valid, so no real worries, and I think by "updates other than the comic" they might actually be referring to blogging, link updates, etcetera rather than "sketchbook hiatuses".

I don't think UH is in danger of being removed. Keenspace is basically a charity, there aren't too many places that offer free webspace with ftp access and free services like autokeen. What I'm saying is, if there isn't any time to do something such as make an updated list of tags that you can use or making a newsbox that you can use if you have a rating higher than PG, they wont waste their time doing something as petty as removing a site just because it's updating with sketches.
I think the main problem with sites that aren't updating with the comic is that once people finish with their comic, they start abusive the space with mp3s and things.
Anyway.
http://iapw.keenspace.com/ hasn't updated since January so go figure.
Still it's not worth the risk, you need to get the last strips up as soon as humanly possible!!

Heh. This avatar IS a little more expressive of my Mad Scientist side; that's probably due in no small part to the fact that the next year or so of comics is going to be a real gallery of experiments.
The "eyeless" look is probably more than a little disconcerting as well. This was originally done for a "mask" effect; this avatar's tag is "The Masked Retriever", after all. The look was to be a little like Batman's cowl on the Animated Series, or The Tick's eyes.
Eventually, though, I stuck with this somewhat alarming critter because he just looks cool. Scary, maybe, but cool. I'm hoping the current "filler comic" will give this avatar enough of a "Scott McCloud" context that a reader won't be terribly intimidated.

I was hoping the changes would bring about some discussion.
I said it before: the color finale is still coming. In fact, it is the next thing in the queue. I'm just using the Filler to give me enough leeway to do the color finale up proper, and to stretch my creative legs. The comic that's up right now is the first of a wave of experimental comics that will blow through this site, one after another. Sequential works of sequential art. The new site title is now "Beating a Dead Comic" because Umlaut House is over, BUT the website to find my comics is still CALLED Umlaut House.
Also, I wanted to be kind of ominous for a change.
