They might have also stolen the idea from D&D or any number of fantasys where the mages have little magic stones orbiting their heads.. they're called Ioun Stones in D&D, and are rather useful little items..

But in fantasy stuff, it's magical not mechanical.
Anyway, what's up with the pic there? It looks like a photo just with one of thsoe effects you can put on in photoshop...
