So... is that a 1K? resistor with a +/-5% tolerance or a 102D semi-conductor diode?

Exactly right, A! It's a 1k +/- 5% resistor. Pretty much the workhorse of low-current EE, really, since one volt at one kilo-ohm is one miliamp. I think LEDs need about 22mA, for reference, so with the diode-drop of .6v.

"Spaghetti" as in working out an electrical-wire mess of "spaghetti," or are you speaking literally, and saying that you understand nothing of what's being said? (As for myself, I understand the basics, but I yearn to learn how to make such things so well-known that I rattle them off as Allan has.)
