Assording to the Captain Mike comic strip, Mad Science is distinguished by those doing research and generating ideas and theories that are couter to the scientific norm of the time. Those that challenge conventional thinking. Given both Relativity and Quantum Physics, Einstein would probably qualify as one of the most Mad Scientists of all history. He certainly had the hair for it too.

When you are a Mad Scientist, you do not have a midlife crises. At midlife(assuming you are not eaten by one of your creations), you simply continue to cause crises for others.
And yes, they do responsible things with science. Every time someone is sensible enough to rear or follow a warning mabel they are.
