I like your ideas, but my main advice would be practice, practice, practice. I know everyone says it and I know it's cliche, but it's true. Even the most talented artist hasta get out the 'ol sketchbook and pencil and start scribbling away. With time, you'll be able to look back at your old stuff and then look at your more recent stuff and REALLY be able to see a difference.
Also, to make your figures look more real, I would lightly sketch out the body positioning with shapes, then once you know you've got proportions right, go back and clean it up and go into details (ie: clothes, facial features, muscles, etc.). That's usually my method. Everyone's different, though. That just seems to work for most people.

Thanx. A friend drew it for me back over the summer. She's really good, but now she's into the whole Vasquez scene with the dark drawings and stuff : P bleh.

ah, not every style is for everyone. Many artists have phases, as they seek their niche.
btw, you can probably tell that this avatar is a "quick" sketch of "me" that didn't scale well. (my second attempt at inking. hm )
Shading and backgrounds are on my "to do" list, followed by colour.
As my piano teacher always said "Perfect practice makes perfect." ( She had a deaf student who would memorize music, and be able to replay it consistantly every time, but wrong. ) That's why I ask for advice. :)

I was the heart shaped armadillo. However, when I took this test, I really didn't feel very heart shaped, but at least I had that shell.
