New Direction Found!

I have found direction! That which I was seeking has been found, and it wasn't over yonder mountain, across yonder ocean, and through yonder forest. In fact, it was in my own back yard! Heck, it practically is my own back yard!<P>Let me start from the beginning... No, that would take too long. Let me start here: In college I got into anime, then later comics. Now that I'm out of college and I've seen way too much anime, I've gone cold turkey and haven't watched any in ages. I think life without anime is better for me.<P>However, it would seem some people here in the states like anime, and it would seem that many of those people are also internet-izens. This is probably part of the reason megatokyo and neobaka get a lot of hits, despite the complete lack of updates for weeks at times. And with anything successful come clones, or at least 'anime-themed' clones, like idle minds v4.0, Team-of-Anti-Perdition, and various other strips I'm sure we all know. Anyway, not to knock everyone out there who draws anime-style strips, and definately not to knock fan-boy readers like josh lesnick of wendy does, I just think it's not for me.<P>I'm also realizing that I am not a storyteller, I am a fantasizer. I draw the little scenarios that run through my head every day, not a story with a beginning, middle, end, and sequels... I have no real plot. I have characters that get tossed about like corn kernels in a hot air popper, if those even exist anymore.<P>So what can I do? I won't do anime-comics, so I started thinking of other ideas. Unfortunately, every one I though of was taken. I was at my wit's end. So I quit thinking about it and then it hit me!<P>I had been wanting to do a web page about my city, Tucson, AZ. I want to take pictures around town of all the stupid, amazing, or interesting stuff that is all over, and make witty remarks about it, and screw around with people like Bam Margera in Camp-Kill-Yourself-2000 (CKY2K).<P>So here's my idea: combine my Stupid-Stuff-in-Tucson-Web-Page with my comic! Take pictures with my cheap, semi-functional digital camera, then draw stuff interacting with the stuff in the photos. It'll be a multimedia festival that tickles the senses, and it's an original idea, as I haven't seen any other comics about Tucson around. Plus it forces me to go out more with friends to hot spots around the city, which means not sitting at home so much.<P>People who don't know anything about Tucson will probably like it cause they can make fun of it. People who know about Tucson or live in it will probably like it because they see this stuff all the time and joke about it. Plus this might even draw a local crowd, which is more of a crowd than I've had in the past.<P>So that's my idea. Comments?<P>------------------

From all the responses I can see you're all thrilled with the idea! Terrific! (sp?)<P>I'm back from my vacation, I went to visit my alma mater or something (that school I graduated from a year ago). I needed closure, so I went back, hung with my old friends who are just taking a long time to graduate or are younger, talked with my old profs that were still around, and looked at all the new buildings and work done on campus. It was a good trip altogether, and I think I achieved closure. Does that mean I'll be different now? Probably. Does that mean I'll abandon everything I knew to be true and good? Of course not. I'll still be same old me, I just have my priorities adjusted, or something like that.<P>I think I'll screw around with my comic a lot more now. Plays Well With Others, Inc., Boneheads, the Super Secret Art Project, the Stupid-Stuff-in-Tucson-Photo-Comic, and anything else I do will all keep going, and I think they'll get better, cause I'm not going to focus on them getting better. My reasoning comes from two sources:<P>1) C.S. Lewis. In his book "Mere Christianity," he discusses how Christians need to aim for something higher to achieve lower greatness. His example was this: People build great cathedrals and buildings for God, as they are aiming for heaven. If you aim to be either a great Christian or a great architect, then you won't be able to achieve the same greatness or something. Lewis is probably going to punch me in the afterlife for screwing up his example, but that's the idea.<P>2) Leah from <A HREF="http://formen.ign.com" TARGET=_blank>http://formen.ign.com</A> . Leah writes a daily column or five on the formen.ign website, of which I am in the dead center of the focus group. She runs the "dating" section, which I advise any fanboy-otaku-gamers, college guys, or people with odd relationship problems to read, cause she really knows her stuff. One piece of advice she gives over and over to lonesome guys is not to go out and look for love. She says that you should focus on other things, and love just happens. The other things she recommends are usually taking dance classes, volunteering, and any other kind of coed-everyone-welcome activity you can think of. If you just sulk about and try to find a partner without doing anything, you'll most likely fall short.<P>So, by combining the advice of these two sources, plus Lazy's advice (author of Lazy's World), and throwing in a priority shift, a drawing tablet, and good outlook on life, my comic will excel. I think by focusing on having the most fun I can possibly have, and not focusing on making the best comic on the web, I'll create something cool out of something mediocre without trying.<P>JB<P>"He beat the drummer of his own march" or something.<P>------------------

I can't sleep well lately, so while I lay in bed, I draw comics. I usually get through two or three a night, and last night I even did four. Being ahead on updates, not being pressured, having fun, I'm about as happy as a dung beetle in a stockyard!<P>Gosh this board is slow...<P>JB<P>------------------
