How is it going so far?

Postby Daxhack on Thu Jan 04, 2001 2:39 am

The main question on everyone's mind, well at least my mind anyway, is how is the comic strip looking so far? I do see hits on the strip every day, but I receive very little feedback on it. I don't like jumping to conclusions but I can really only take that in a negative sense. It has only been on keenspace for a few weeks, so it could still be just a slow start, and in the middle of the holiday season, etc.
But I'm still curious to hear what people like and dislike about the strip so far. Here's some topics to get you going:
Can you relate to the characters?
Do you laugh out loud, chuckle, groan, or just get more disappointed with each strip?
If you read it daily and keep coming back, why?
If you read it once and never came back, why?
Did you tell all your friends to read it?
Did you tell them to avoid it like the plague?
Did it just seem like another struggling comic on a free server with mediocre art and mildly entertaining jokes, or does it show enough potential to eventally get a place on your favorite links page?
Did you bookmark it?
What would you like to see more of? Or less of? (Naked lemmings, super-sayajins, boneheads, college life, crazy situations, romance, action, drama, slapstick, plot, and cameos all come to mind...)
JB
------------------

Ok, to answer some of your questions, Super Hawaii-Jin is indeed a reference to Dragonball (Z GT EX PLUS ALPHA ETC), one that Hawaii(he's a real person) actually came up with himself, and I thought it was pretty amusing at the time, so I went with it. I actually don't really care for much DBZ, but I thought the idea was amusing.
"There is no fork" is yet another concept borrowed from the matrix, the elevator shaft scene to be specific. The original line is "There is no spoon," but i felt lawsuits could ensue... I tried to recreate the panel as best as I could from a mental picture (I have the DVD but I was to lazy to go pause on that frame). I figured if anyone got all the previous matrix jokes, they'd get this one. If not, then it's just like people not getting Foxtrot from last sunday's paper cause they never saw 2001. In the future I will try to avoid too much assumed outside knowledge. I realized that makes for better comics in the long run anyway.
Boneheads! will be back when I get bored or have little time. For whatever reason, corny jokes and lame jokes seem to be a forte I have
Here's a little system I came up with to spread some web-hit cheer around keenspace. Every time I'm bored and I already finished all my usual comics, I go to the keenspace list (which seems random enough) and start reading every strip from the top down. I see that many people just reserved domains and haven't done anything yet, which makes for fast progression through the list if I find a comic that I particularly like, I go read all the archives right then. usually they end up on my list: http://www.daxhack.com/comics/comics.html
and if it's any consolation, I read all your comics a week or so ago by this method!
Thanks for the feedback!
JB

Perhaps I should change the name of the comic to "Plays Well With Others, Inc. and Dating Service"
I really liked the back and forth comic too. I'd say one of my favorites so far is January 1st ( http://pwwoi.keenspace.com/d/20010101.html ), where Hawaii is off in the background doing his own thing and getting tangled in the rope while Jason and the unnamed female lemming are furthering the plot. I was thinking about an episode of pokemon I saw where ash, misty, and brock are all talking serious and pikachu is playing with a bottle of ketchup the whole time. It's one of my favorite pokemon scenes, so I made an attempt at using that concept in my comic. Of course Hawaii isn't as cute as pikachu, but until I learn to draw small, fuzzy animals, he'll have to do.
I realize the characters are really underdeveloped right now. I hope to spend the next few weeks in various normal situations so that the character personalities will dominate the action, and we'll finally begin to see what they're like and how they respond to stimuli. I'll also introduce a few more characters to fill out the spectrum a bit.
A month of comics is a pretty short time, I agree. To judge a book by the first 30 pages is pretty hard. It seems like a lot longer to me just because I think about my strips a lot. I'm always jotting things down as possible strips for later, or reading other comics to get ideas on how to draw things, or reading tutorials, or downloading fonts, or doodling on the sides of paper, etc.
JB
------------------

>>Can you relate to the characters? <<
Hummm... I can't say anyone of them is me in particular, but I do know a lot of goofballs.

>>Do you laugh out loud, chuckle, groan, or just get more disappointed with each strip? <<
Well, I don't laugh at many things, but I must say that it's definitely getting better. My favorite strip was the one where Jason and Hawaii (didn't) figure out that they were running back and forth between two walls. The art is getting better and more consistent as well. Kudos.

>>If you read it daily and keep coming back, why?<<
Well, actually, I just come here to meet men.

>>Did you tell all your friends to read it?
Did it just seem like another struggling comic on a free server with mediocre art and mildly entertaining jokes, or does it show enough potential to eventally get a place on your favorite links page?<<
I was hoping to see how it evolved first. It hasn't been _that_ long.

>>Did you bookmark it?<<
I memorized the URL. ^_^

>>What would you like to see more of? Or less of? (Naked lemmings, super-sayajins, boneheads, college life, crazy situations, romance, action, drama, slapstick, plot, and cameos all come to mind...)<<
Can't say anything in particular, though I never mind anything funny. Nostalgic video games usually work too.
Keys
