Charlie Brown's Baseball Team
So, who played each position?<P>While I'm pretty sure the outfield changed
a bit (with the exception of Lucy)(Chuck did
some platooning, I guess), I'm curious who
knows all the other positions.<P>Particularly 1B and 3B.<P>And, bonus points, who was once named as
the DH in a strip?<P>------------------

This one's a toughie because there have been lots of switches and replacements. Not to mention that the outfield has always been a mess.<P>Technically, this is how it goes...<P>Pitcher: Charlie Brown
1st Base: Shermy (remember him? really old character)
2nd Base: Linus
3rd Base: Pig-Pen
Shortstop: Snoopy
Right Field: Lucy
Left Field: Peppermint Patty
Center Field: Frieda
Catcher: Schroeder<P>First base remains sort of an open subject, I guess. Can't think of anyone officially holding the spot since Shermy.<P>I'm screwed on you DH question, though...<P>Case<P>------------------

Pig Pen on 3rd! I shoulda knowed that!<P>Was Shermy on 1st? I remember Sherm (one
of the first four characters, and I've
thought about employing him myself, since
I liked him), but didn't remember he was
1B.<P>Frieda did cover CF a lot, but both Patty
and Violet were on the team early on, so
I assumed they were LF and CF. Maybe
Frieda replaced Patty.<P>I'm afraid I'm going to have to deduct
points for saying Peppermint Patty was
in LF, since she was the manager/pitcher
of another team (who lived across town-
Lucy blamed mistakes on jet lag when they
squared off).<P>Snoopy to Linus was a wicked double play
combo!<P>------------------

You know when I was a kid I had some kind of board game that was basically Snoopy Baseball. I think it had all the characters in their positions. Too bad its in my parents attic or something.<P>Is it just me or did the baseball themed strips dissappear from Peanuts in the 90s?<P>------------------

Yeah - I had the baseball board game.<P>You rolled three dice and looked up the
result in the box lid.<P>The baseball ones declined in frequency, but
I don't think they disappeared.<P>A series I particularly liked (in the 80's?
maybe late 70's) had Charlie Brown run away
from home after the EPA got after him for
biting the kite-eating tree. He lived in
a cardboard box and coached a baseball team
of pre-schoolers.<P>------------------

I had the baseball game too. It was pretty cool...<P>Wasn't the Kite-Eating Tree like the meanest thing in the world? I remember as a kid hating when that tree would smile. I always thought it was the most evil thing I had ever seen.<P>Now I know better. It's cyclists.<P>Case

Yeah, the kite-eating tree was evil.<P>Peanuts is really pretty surreal if you
think about it - I grew up with it, as I
imagine most of you did - so it didn't <i>seem</i>
surreal to me then, but trying to look at it
again for the first time, there's LOTS of
strange stuff:<P>the kite-eating tree
a kid who played Beethoven on a toy piano
a kid-run psychiatric <i>booth</i>
a dog who imagined WWI airplane fights
a sentient school building
as mentioned above, Charlie Brown living in
a cardboard box for a while<P>With Calvin and Hobbes, it was easy to
appreciate the quantum leaps that Watterson
brought to cartooning, because I was in
college when it started. With Peanuts,
the quantum leaps are there, but harder to
see. Peanuts is truly amazing.

Yeah, he did. When he was on the lam.<P>Sergio Aragones (sp?) said it pretty well -
something to the effect of, "In 300 years,
when people talk about comic strips of
the 20th century, 'Peanuts' is the only
one anyone will remember."<P>------------------

Wow I guess everyone had that baseball game! Now I know where Sparky made his cash. I really like Peanuts too but I think Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side will be remembered as great too. In their own way they added a lot to the comics vocabulary. It's hard to believe growing up we had all that plus Bloom County and Doonesbury. <P>------------------
