Just read in my newspaper that Damon Knight died on Sunday. A Hugo winner for his criticism (In Search of Wonder, 1956), I remember him most for his Orbit anthologies, which were significant at the time (along with Ted Carnell's New Writings) in that they contained only new stories. He was one of the Futurians (along with Asimov, Kornbluth and Pohl among others), co-founded the Milford Writers Conferance and was the founder and first President of the SFWA.

A pause for reflection and remembrance.

I heard about that when I woke up Sunday to the radio news. As I was getting ready I was disapointed that I didn't know who they were talking about.

In case you are interested, NPR interviewed the wonderful Patrick Nielsen Hayden about Damon Knight for yesterday's All Things Considered.

A Real Audio version of the broadcast can be found (until about 10:00 PM EST today) at http://www.npr.org/atc3.smil for now (it is segment 18 of 19, if you want to skip straight to it). After 10:00 PM EST on Thursday, it will be moved to the archives; I'll try to find a new URL for it after that point.

Okay. A direct link to the NPR segment in question can be found at http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/atc/20020417.atc.18.ram.

Damon's local newspaper, the Eugene, Oregon Register-Guard, has the following obituarty: http://www.registerguard.com/news/20020 ... .0417.html

Other obituaries and tributes include those of the SFWA, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and The Independent. Only the last one, written by The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction Editor John Clute, fails to use Patrick Nielsen Hayden as quote material.
