Alisin of DALnet, http://www.dal.net , has set up a new chat channel at #faans.

I'm going to go ahead and declare this one official, since it seems a bit more stable (and I have an easier time getting to it) than its counterpart. My apologies for chat problems and miscommunications in the past...

To kick off chat discussion for the weekend, I'm letting a minor story detail about TIMES OF WAR slip here. Spoiler ahead.

At least one of the Science Fiction Club members... my God, I've know this for months, and it still hurts to write this...

At least one of them will not survive TIMES OF WAR.

So... now you know.

So, can we discuss who might be the one to go on the message boards, or is this intended to be an exclusive topic for the dalnet channel?

BTW, how <i> does</i> one get to the dalnet, anyway?

Oh dear, when dealing with villians of this magnitude I suppose something along these lines was inevitable. My first speculation will run to the obvious: Alisin either dies from complications of her illness or perishes trying to save Rikk.

Alisin and I are there NOW, and I'll be checking in and out for most of the rest of the day.

Hysteria, I don't expect anybody to keep "board topics" separate from "chat topics," though chat is better for role-playing and other things. I just wanted to give regular boardies something new to talk about, and I'd been meaning to announce this for a while...

Just note the interview at Coreworlds; T points out that "Alisin is scheduled to MEET Liz in an upcoming COOL CAT STUDIO comic"

Course, it could be a flashback, or even a ghost (CCS has some degree of paranormal wierdness) but it shows that things aren't quite cut and dried yet.

It had just better not be Tim...

Fascinating! I'll have to be sure to be on IRC more now. This will make many things so much easier.

I just hope that a rift doesn't form between boardies and chatter. *shudder*

Anyway, as a far as someone dying...... I'm up in the air on who.

As far as alisin in CCS.....well I don't have a clue WHAT Gisele is doing over there so I'd be more worried about her end than T's. My loyalties are clear.

Maybe someone could post some basic IRC commands/etiquette, for those of us who haven't chatted in a few years and need to be reminded? *hint hint*

For all you Mac users out there in need of an IRC client, try: http://www.ircle.com

Best client I've seen in ages, even if the mIRC colors don't really translate.

Here's a few commands and a bit of ettiquite (if you think of anything important I don't mention here, be sure to add it!):

/join #channel_name This command lets you join a channel.
/leave #channel_name This command lets you leave a channel.
/me <text> This command can be thought of as an action statement. It puts your nick at the begining of a sentence like this: Wishdragon grins and waves hello.
/nick Nickname This command changes your name.
/whois nickname This command gives you a little bit of information about the nickname you're interested in.
/msg nickname <text> This command lets you send a private message to a specific user that no one else can see.
/ignore nickname If you have trouble with spammers, just type this command to ignore everything that comes out of their digital mouths.
/ping nickname This command lets you see the response time of someone's modem. If you suspect someone is lagging, you can test it with this command.

As far as ettiquite goes.. use the same wonderful common sense you all use on the board. Don't spam (repeatedly posing the same thing again and again) the channel, don't 'shout' in all capital letters, don't beg for ops (that is SO rude!), keep large ansi scripts and colors to a minimum (some of us can't see your beautiful colors and it comes out as useless gibberish!), and be kind to your fellow chatters. You're all very excellent people, so I have every confidence in your ability to converse smoothly and politely.

Can't wait to see you all over on the IRC!

Now your alias says you're Captain Jean-Luc Picard..

Maritza, you might want to try another server or the dalnet webclient.
Hope to see you soon

Maritza,

Odds are DAL-net is requiring users on your ISP to use identd to connect. If you're using a cable modem router it is probably blocking identd from going through.

There are instructions available on the Net for how to make identd work on most of the popular routers.

Another option is to try for the rare DAL-net server which will let you on without identd. A friend of mine had some luck last week with arcor.de.eu.dal.net, but no guarantees that one will still let you on without identd.

If you do have a router and would like instructions for how to set it up to work with identd, I'll be glad to help you track them down. I'd need to know the make and model of the router.

Hope this helps.

[edited for typo in server name]

Well, I can't get in. Not that I'm disappointed or anything -- I was expecting not to, since I'm behind a firewall that doesn't let IRC through (or Morpheus, or Gnutella... someone save me  )...

nyarlahotep,

Is this a firewall you have an ability to configure yourself, or is there some oppressive network administrator type authority figure controlling it?

If it's the former it should be possible to configure it to allow IRC to pass through.

If it's the latter, you might try to the Java client Alisin mention in an earlier post. Last time I used it it was wonkier than a ceiling fan with one of the blades off, but it was just barely possible to chat using it.

The Java client for DAL-net can be accessed from the main DAL-net page at http://dal.net

Look for a box on the right that says "Chat Now!". Enter your desired nickname (it defaults to "Guest" followed by a random number) and click Go.

You may then get a security warning asking if you want to install IRC applet from JPilot Software Company. You'll have to agree to install it in order to run the Java client.

By default you'll be in a channel called #DALusers. To go to the Fans channel, type "/join #faans" without the quotes in the box at the bottom of the window.

I live in University dorms. Being that I live in oppressive Britain as opposed to Free and Noble California :-/ the firewall is operated by the University. Good luck trying to persuade them.

Tried the Java client. Doesn't look like it will work. Sigh. Oh, well. Will try again soon.
