Let me explain. Until quite recently, the only anime I owned or had ever seen was Ghost in the Shell, and despite owning it, I only saw it once thanks to parental intrusion. However, today an anime store has opened near me and I've been saving up money for something of the sort and bought myself the first four episodes of Bubblegum Crisis and Neon Genesis Evangelion on DVD.
And I must say...wow.

Bask in the glory of the EVA's!
For no reason at all, I pose to you this question!
What is the coolest Mecha Around?

What is the most Powerful Mecha?

The most powerful mecha is probably the EVA.
However, I'd say the coolest mecha is Escaflowne in Vision of Escaflowne. Zybock's Gymelefs and the EVAs probably share second place.

Well, the most powerful Mech has got to be an EVA unit, thanks to that wonderful little thing called an AT field. Take that away, though, and I think they could be beaten by quite a few things.
The coolest, however, have got to be ACs from the PSX/PS2 game series Armored Core. They rock. They're 30 feet tall, they come armed to the teeth, and are fully customizable. Once you get one, they start poppin up all over the place too...
Just in case you've never heard of the things, here goes. You take your big doggie a-walkin and a-clobberin through numerous missions of blowin stuff up. That's the core (pardon the pun) philosophy of the game.
As for the obsession, I own all of them released in the US, have beaten them all, and am practically reveared as the God of Armored Core in the greater Kearney area. Fear me.

Ha! And again I say, HA!

An Evangelion unit, powerful? I can only barely classify those things as mechs anyway, considering the HUGE amount of organic material component within one. You want raw power? Try taking on Voltron, the Defender of the Universe! That's right, the original Lion form Voltron! In a fight between Voltron and Eva, the Voltron Force said "Form Blazing Sword!" and Eva was smote unto alittle cinders!!!

Ahem. I'd go with Escaflowne for coolest mech, just ahead of Duelgar from MAZE In Mega-Burst Space. Now, if Duelgar transformed into a dragon ...

--GB

"The best thing about Giant Robo was that they didn't burn 'Protoculture' to power their machines!"

Giant Robo rocks out. I just wish they'd bring them out on DVD THIS year instead of NEXT.
Hey, which BGC is it? Classic or BGC2040? That's important, really it is...
(And get Trigun when you can - Vash the Stampede is great.)

You mean all this time you've really been talking mecha and I've ignored it? Shux. (FP is a mechahead of fairly high caliber.)
I've said in other threads here and other places that I don't really care for Evangelion. I've seen the first 8 episodes of the TV series (IIRC) and the End of... movie, and the movie turned me so far off that I don't want to see the rest.
I still think that the best mecha anime of all time is Gundam: Char's Counterattack (although 08th MS Team is giving it serious competition).
The most powerful mech is Gunbuster. Anything that can blast a gas giant planet into a sun by itself beats anything that still needs umbilical cords. Nuff said.
I love Cyclones but am more of a Garland kind of guy.

The character design is distinctly inferior to the Kenichi Sonoda original, which is (I think) one of the finest pieces of anime of all time. From the opening Ridley-Scott inspired shot to the last climactic battle, it just worked incredibly well. Get the original. The real one. I won't say the new one is bad (I haven't had a chance to see more than the covers of the videos, so I'd be talking through the wrong orifice if I did), but the original kicks ass.
There's no serious anime I recommend more strongly.
As for NGE, I know lots of people who like it. I can see why they like it. It just never did a thing for me, though. Except for the toothpick gag. That was good. The rest felt... sterile, somehow. I couldn't form an emotional connection to it. Same thing happened with Babylon 5, by the way. I rarely saw anything objectionable about it, I just couldn't bring myself to give a rat's ass. Not really sure why in that case.
Maccabee
------------------

Y'know.. I'm still ambivalent over Neon Genisis Eva. I've watched a few different anime series now and I have to say that there are elements in NGE that I just havn't found anywhere else. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it's true.
I agree that some (okay, a LOT) of the things that happen in the series were a bit silly, but all I have to do is think of Asuka's Final Battle (in the movies) and all is forgiven. Even the movies themselves. By Jupiter! Yea verrily, that fight dist rock hardeth core!!
On the whole, I'd recommend the series, but more for the amazing artwork and action rather than the pacing and plot. Besides, how can you not like a show that thoughtfully provides white noise spots so its viewing audience can squeeze in their daily five-minute Zen meditation?
-Wish

Me I consider it the epitome of horrid storytelling. and trust me I liked the earlier episodes for the promise of conclusion and other things that are relevant to just completion of a story....it got worse.. way worse. I was surprised I didn't have a seizure. But you have to see it its like a right of anime fandom passage like sitting through a full run of Akira or complaining about dubs.

I've never seen NGE, but as for coolest/most powerfull mecha.....
Most powerfull would have to be the SDF-1, no holds barred this thing has the most firepower I've ever seen.
Coolest is harder because there are so many awesome mecha out there.... I'll get back to it later I suppose.

I don't count that as a Mech. Yeah, it's bot-ish, but A) it's actually a space ship, B) I've never seen it actually DO anything even remotely human (except stand up and sit down) and C) it's a city.
Plus, it's just TOO FREAKIN HUGE for a mech!

Well, how do you define a mech? Is it just a powered suit or is it any humoniod robot controlled by a person inside it or just plain any humoniod robot?

My vote for coolest has to go to the Talgeese 3. Zechs is just 100% pure Bad-Ass! (I always take the pilot(s) into consideration with Mecha.)
For power, I just can't think of anthing with more raw POW than an EVA, unfortunatly. I hate it when we all agree!

Snuh?
I've never seen Bubblegum Crisis. But I have seen the first four eps of EVA. And while the very beginning of the first episode is cool with its eerie silence, and the fight scenes are beautifully done, I more often found myself howling with derisive laughter at all the weird, pretentious or just plain insane elements in EVA.
[Peppy, Ricky-Martin-esque theme song]
MILITARY: Quick, 14-year-old boy! We need you to pilot a giant robot and save the world!
KID: No! I don't wanna! *sulk*
MILITARY: Please! We're desperate for 14-year-olds to pilot our giant robots!
KID: No! I don't wanna! And you can live with a totally hot, scantily clad older woman who alternately verbally abuses you and makes improper advances towards you!
KID: I said no! *sulk sulk* ... well, okay.
[Camera remains fixed on both characters for, like, five minutes, with no one moving or saying anything, and just the ambient background noise.]
I'm not totally biased against Anime. You're all wrong.
The Gunbuster 3 - it was over an AU long, and massed about equal to a star system. When it used it's main weapon, it destroyed the entire galactic core. Top that.
OK, so it wasn't technically a mecha. Yes, it was destroyed by the singularity generator, too, I'll grant you that. And sure, it did have to be defended by the Gunbuster II while it charged up the device...
Oh, hell, let's forget I mentioned it, OK?
