Oh, geeze, yikes.
I tried to tip Val off so that we could avoid this but it looks like I messed up.
When I told her the difference I meant fantasy as in it's not based on actual historical figures and events/ battles. I didn't mean fantasy as in D&D. I do know that a lot of work is put into all the SCA stuff so don't blame Val for the comment. It was my bad. When I talked to her we were discussing re-enactments more than the SCA.
------------------

Mostly 16th century English ballad type stuff, with a scattering of drinking songs from the same period -- the more formal literature from that period tends to be complex, while earlier pieces tend to be inaccessible to audiences accustomed to modern English. There are people who take the trouble to learn it, but it doesn't show up much around campfires.
I've heard some fairly impressive insturmental ensembles as well. My standards are pretty low: I've played, or rather tried to play, some early instruments, and I consider anything beyond a recorder quartet to be fairly impressiv. Even the recorders are impressive when well played. Actually, a bass recorder is fairly impressive regardless.
FWIW, I believe that Baroque music is usually associated with the 17th and 18th centuries; the SCA "cutoff" is 1600.
Judy
