Wasn't that long ago, was it? Or could it be that I'm older than I am willing to believe I am. Being stuck in temporal hysteresi will do that to a person.
In theory, ranchers could breed an even more convincing unicorn by grafting a horn-growing organ onto a horse and fixing the genetics so the horn continues to grow and isn't rejected with future generations. In theory. Putting wings on Pegasus, however...even I am not going to touch that one. That matter is best left to Zeus.

Well I know that the 'unicorns' of today are usually created by grafting a horn bud of a young cow onto the forehead of a foal or even a young goat (as with the once famous 'unicorn' touted by the Ringling Brother's Circus. Just as Shanna commented in today's strip), but from what I hear, it's a difficult operation and very painful for the animal. As for the genetic engineering... Who knows? Not my area of expertise.
-Wish

Sorry for being anal...
You'd actually alter the DNA of an egg. You'd then plant that egg into a horse and the egg would grow up to be a unicorn. Since the alteration is at the DNA level, our unicorn would pass on the "horn" trait onto its offspring. Well, probably only some of its offspring (explaining this is going to get too technical). The difficult part (i.e. beyond today's/near future's technology) would be making the horn grow in the right place. So, no unicorns for now. By the way, why are talking about unicorns?

Welcome aboard, Kandezok! Yesterday's strip brought up the unicorn thing, and they seem to be one of Shanna's favorite fantasies... (Bonus points to anyone who can find the strips that are evidence of this...)
[This message has been edited by T Campbell (edited 03-28-2001).]

One of my favorite cartoon books is The I Hate Unicorns Book edited by Kevin Duane. It features art by Frank Kelly Freas, Larry Todd, Barbi Johnson, and a whole lot of other people. Very funny in a "Pressed Fairies" sort of way. Good luck finding it, as it's almost 20 years out of print. I especially liked Dan O'Neill's safari story...
------------------

Hmmmmm.. the list of Shanna Unicorn references brought me to the 'rainbow' strip during Loving the Alien http://faans.com/d/20001101.html . And now I'm wondering... who the heck are all these other little kids and why isn't Kath there?
One of 'em looks just like Rumi (BTW: Rumi with a view.. Hehehe Good one, Nic. My personal favorite will always be 'I am a sensitive ARTIST!!!' -_^). She's the only one in FULL color. Not even lil' Shanna has colored clothing. Symbolic? Another one could almost look like Rikk. More childhood friends? Random metaphoric kids never intended to be defined by the storyline? Who are these young critters? What is their quest?
-Wish

I'll throw a crazy theory in there to contrast with your logical one.
Shanna is probably an android since all she thinks about is unicorns. Her "mom" was an original model that went haywire. The "father" of course was their creator, he was trying to make an android that could imagine and fantasize, be truly human, but it, as we can see, went horrible wrong. "He

Hey, I try my best. Also of note: the fact that she was knocked out by an agent's dart, and knocked out again by ether, could simply be part of the programming. She has a circulatory system (gotta have flesh and blood and all those other bits), so the substance in her "blood" is analyzed, and the body acts accordingly. I don

Two things.
Murasaki: He didn't mean the graft of the horn would be genetic engineering. He said that genetic engineering was ANOTHER option. GRAFTING is possible and has been for some time. Just look at Kevin Neelon and his babboons a*BUTTOCKS*s. I saw that RB&BB unicorn, they kept it far enough away from the crowds that It coulda been a strap on for all I know......
*remembers a Kevin and Kell comic about implants*
Secondly, the children on the unicorns are all going to be part of a spinoff series T has in the works called the Suburban Fantasy Squad. The SFS is a group of kids that fight neighborhood bullies using the powers of their imagination, they also learn important life lessons from the local storyteller (and king of the fantasy world of make believe) Mister Cochran (King Cochran of Twinklie). The idea is being optioned as an Elseworlds Fans! Title.
Also on the back burner is Guth: Son of Loki.
------------------
