Good GRIEF!!
And just when I thought that Rikk couldn't get ANY more like his 'real world' avatar.... (an ex-bf of mine) Now he's Epsicopalian TOO??? *sigh* I take my top ten list back. Kill him.
Okay, so this brings me to my actual point.. how many of you out there know other dopplegangers of the club? Do you love them? Hate them? Married to them? Broken up with them? Go to school with them? Maybe you ARE one of them! What's the deal, folks.. do the Fans really exist in our world?
-Wish

Checking her life for hidden video cameras. T is obviously spying on me. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/wink.gi ... QUOTE>
I think a big part of the appeal of Fans is that we all see a little of ourselves and our fellow fen in the characters there. Not only does everybody know a Tim, but in some ways all of us are a little like Tim.
I don't know anyone who fits the group as well as your ex apparently does, but I do have a friend who seems an aweful lot like what we've seen of Guth so far (aside from the fact that people occaisonally pronounce his name correctly!).
I suspect that this is the same appeal all of the geek-themed comics (Kowalski's "The Three Geeks", Kovalic's "Dork Tower", and Blackburn's "Knights of the Dinner Table" come to mind).
I guess the really short answer to your question is "no".

I personally know two 'Tims's, work with a 'Shanna', and am a 'Rumi' myself. Except for shojo part, that is.
Thor

I'll second that. There's no way at all I can answer Wish's question fairly, since all of the characters take a lot from me or my immediate experience. Rumy's more unusual traits (expatriot Japanese, martial-arts schoolgirl) were added during her development, primarily to keep her from turning into a T Campbell clone.

Mind, Rikk is far from perfect. His idealism often blinds him to the thornier, more complicated side of issues... he wasn't expecting Katherine's attempted coup, Alisin's love game, or Will to actually fire. This kind of thing is a much more serious handicap in real life situations, too...

Not really FANS-related, but more of a "human experience" thing in general...

quote:
'My' Rikk is the kind of guy who hurts people without ever suspecting for an instant that he's doing it.

Ummm... I've done that before. I'm not proud of it-- in fact, it's one of the few things in life I'm deeply ashamed of, even years after amends have been made. But it happens. And I'd argue that for at least some people like myself (and fictional characters like Rikk,) it doesn't mean all the beliefs we profess are lies; it's just a harsh lesson in how hard those beliefs are to uphold in practice. And if we're lucky, such experiences make us even more determined and better equipped to be the kind of person we wish we were.
... Anyway, I'm personally sorry it happened to you. E-mail me sometime and we can swap amusingly horrific stories about sinister exes. I've got someone in my past whose manipulative skills make Kath look like a rank amateur. (=

Wish, considering that I identify with Rikk more than any of the other Fans, I must admit I'm awfully curious to know what made your Rikk such a bad guy.

Ahhh, Nathan...
I shouldn't talk about ex's too much on the board.. I'll get all bitter and no one will like me for it, and people will tell me that I'm wrong for feeling the way I do, etc, but I will say this much.. 'My' Rikk is the kind of guy who hurts people without ever suspecting for an instant that he's doing it.
It was a whole lot of work and effort on my part to get him to try and enjoy life (almost an Alisin/Rikk syndrome, but no S&M). However, after he loosened up, I ended up with a guy who has broken almost every promise I ever asked that he make to me.
And all that beautiful talk about decency and such didn't seem to bother him one bit, then. To be completely fair and honest, there were mistakes and promises broken on my part as well, but I believe that out of the two of us, I came away from the relationship with the short end of the stick.
I can't change the way I feel about Rikk and his 'ilk.' I don't dislike people who prefer him to the others or identify with him as a character, and no matter HOW much he might remind me of that past hurt, it'll never get me to stop liking Fans!. Anyway, I get the feeling that he's MEANT to be empathised with quite strongly. He's a main character, people see themselves in him, that's the way it is. That's the way it's supposed to be. If no one liked him at all, T wouldn't be doing his job. Just don't ask me to join in.
-Wish

Yes, I can spot similiarities between them and people I know, but I could do the same with my friends and, say, the characters on Friends.
Nicolas

We talked him into doing The Rocky Horror Picture Show a couple of times. Usually he played the criminologist, but once we got him to play the title role.
"Don't dream it. Be it."
------------------
