Rumi's response to Tim was priceless. I'm so happy she turned around like that.

Hi,
Rumy's comment on Eva was among the harshest and most damning pieces of criticism I've ever seen.
"You get out of the series what you bring to it."
If you don't get anything out of a piece of fiction than you didn't bring to it then that work I would consider to be an utter failure. It doesn't have to be something deep and life-altering; even a feeling of joy will do. But if I walk away with nothing I didn't bring with me, then it's been a waste of my time.
This isn't a critique of Eva, by the way, as I'm not the one describing it that way.
Nicolas

So, Will chose Dragonball Z for the list...
Big surprise there. If he would've watched it starting with the original DB series, he might have changed his opinion.
Here's my list of worst:
1. Samurai Shodown -- terrible, terrible voice acting and scripting killed this one.
2. Iczer 1 -- an oldie but moldie from way back in the eariler nineties, this one has the absolute worst voice acting I've heard.
3. Urusei Yatsura -- the dubbed version, for reasons I've already mentioned.
4. Every series with the word "Macross" in it, except for Macross Plus -- whole alien armadas can be defeated by singing at them?!? All of Japan doesn't have enough suspension of disbelief for this one.
5. Dragon Knight -- snore...snore...
6. Ghost in the Shell -- I know, I know, "the animation's so good!" But the story's so dull!!
7. Appleseed -- same as above, except the animation's not so hot, either.
8. Heavy Metal FAKK 2 -- I know this isn't anime per se, but it still sucked so bad that I had to mention it here.
9. Outlanders -- one of my all-time favorite manga got the butcher treatment when it got shoved into 40 minutes of OAV.
10. The latest Godzilla movie -- again not anime, but rubber suit nostalgia can only go so far before looking silly.
And there it is. Who wants to argue? ^_^
Thor
------------------

OK here's the fast and hard of most of my comments on the above.
DIE MINMEI DIE!!!!!
The only hentai I've seen more than once (because it was good) Is "Beast City: Vampire Madonna". It has the perfect mix of action, sex, humor, and effects. I just wish they'd continue the story.
Plus is by far the best of the Macross, but I haven't seen them all, AND I'm saying this from hindsite. I mean, you compare Tron and the new Final Fantasy movie (whose display I payed homage to today) and which would most people say is better? Though you can definitely use minmei as exibit A.
I hate Hyperdolls.
I saw one thing of UY on Sci-Fi at one point and while I was intrigue, I later found out that the most interesting aspect was a one show plot point. Thus, no more interest.
I've seen Ghost in the Shell and I didn't like it. I thought it was good but I still didn't like it.
OK, about Evangelion. I really liked how this seeming ly typical "Giant-Robots" show turned into a mind boggling suspense drama. There's family drama, sexual tension (everywhere, Tim was right on the nose there), political scandal, coming of age, existential quandries, spiritual debate, and oh yeah GIANT $@$%! ROBOTS kicking lots of alien-monster butt!!!! I think Eva is a great series and I'd love to finish it off. I've seen the entire 13 tape episode run and am looking around for the movies. Funny story, my pal Ian the Viking had 1-10 and when we rented 11-13 we just sat there twitching. Those of you familiar with it will know what I mean. It's one of those series you can spend hours with your friends theorizing about, Just like Fans! Oh yeah, they make fun of americans too, what Anime would be complete without a jab at us.

------------------

I *liked* GHOST IN THE SHELL. The characters were appealing, the villain turned out to be complex rather than just a crush-kill-destroy type, and it dealt with issues of identity in a thoughtful way, unlike a certain Keanu Reeves film I could mention. The pacing was a little slow, but I think we've gotten too used to the frantic pace of the typical action movie. I also appreciated the ambiguous ending.
Even the dubbing was good (and how often can you say *that*?)
This reminds me, I loaned out my copy and need to get it back. It's been a couple of months now...
As for the others you mentioned, I've heard legends about how bad some of them are, but haven't seen any of them.
URUSEI YATSURA is of course wonderful subtitled or in manga format -- it's a Takahashi title, after all. I have heard stories of what a hatchet job the dubbing was. Alas, AnimEigo, a once-great distributor that lost its way...
My pick for worst Anime of all time -- COOL DEVICES. Really bad hentai stuff. All the stereotypically bad things about porn are right there. The mysogyny, the bad characterization, the cheapness of the production... I will *never* forgive the guy at the comic book shop who recommended it to me. The man belongs in therapy for thinking this tripe is worthwhile.
------------------

My vote for the worst?
VAMPIRE HUNTER D!!!!
Madre de Dios, this is one hell of a boring film!!! Yoshitake Amano character designs aside, it's UGLY, STUPID, the characters MAKE NO SENSE, everyone sounds STONED, and it's BORING!!!
In short, I turned it off halfway.

Good hentai....
F^3 is pretty funny.
Episode 1 of ANGEL OF DARKNESS is an effective horror story with likeable characters who even behave intelligently on occaision.
END OF SUMMER is a good teen drama with a lot of sex thrown in -- and NOT ONE RAPE (yay!)
ADVENTURE KID is reasonably good too. Nice payoff at the end of the first story.
LA BLUE GIRL pokes fun at alot of the tentacle-sex "erotic horror" type anime.
And of course there's OGENKI CLINIC. Truly wacked-out art and bizarre plots and stories centering on a clinic for sexual disfunction -- "ogenki" means "health" which is a nice euphemism here.
Most of the other hentai I've seen is unimpressive, to say the least, but these are worth looking at if you don't mind a bit of perversion. They're all more than just sex and/or violence.
Just for the record, I'm a perv but not a total perv. I also like Studio Ghibli sweet innocent child-friendly pieces, Takahashi's romantic comedy (give UY another try, Tom), Kenichi Sonoda's Ridley Scott-inspired action... see, I'm well-rounded! Really!
------------------

Another 'classic' that I think deserves to be trashed - Fist of the North Star. Everything you've said about D, and crappy art as well. Given the options available then, I can't imagine why anyone bothered purchasing the rights to import it. These days, there's so many other shows for English language viewers that I just don't understand the appeal.
Ron

Kenichi Sonoda is Gunsmith cats and umm Gunnum/Battle Angel series i believe.

Oh one good movie to see only if in a very good mood and don't mind becoming depressed as oppessed to being in a depressed mood and becoming suicidal is "Grave of the Fireflies." its real sad but real good.
As to what its about i haven't heard it described as such but it is basically a "Schindler's list" story based in japan during the war.

Very good piece. There's a less depressing one also about the Japanese home front from Studio Ghibli, but I'm blanking on the name at the moment. It takes place in Japanese-occupied Korea. RAIL OF THE STAR, that's it!
------------------

Ridley Scott's also done som good non-sf work. Check out The Duelists starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel. It has one of the best closing lines I've ever heard.
As for BGC, there's a lot more to it than just rogue androids. I don't know if you're willing to invest $25 or $30 just on our say-so, but if you are you can order BGC episode 1 from AmimEigo or Rite Stuff International. I think the set (8 episodes on three DVDs) runs at around $65.
Bubblegum Crisisis 8 episodes long and takes place in 2032. Bubblegum Crash takes place a year later and is three episodes long. Most people think it's quite inferior to the original, possibly because the production company ran out of yen. I haven't seen Bubblegum 2040 or whatever it's called, but the character design on the boxes is not Kenichi Sonoda's work. There's also a "prequel" series called A.D. Police Files that shows how things got as bad as they did by BGC. A.D. Police Files is much darker than the other series. Think Gotham City without Batman. ADPF is also more overtly sexual. I can't speak for the 2040 series, but I do recommend looking at the others if you ever get the chance.
------------------

Blackjack & co.:
Aww, I liked Vampire Hunter D... well, sort of... let me explain...
Before I saw the movie itself, I saw a trailer for the remake, which looks really gorgeous. The problem with the original is that the plot and characters aren't strong enough to make up for the lousy animation, or vice versa.
If the story had been better, I could have forgiven the animation, or if the animation had been better I could have forgiven the story. I'm really looking forward to the remake, because if nothing else, even if the plot hasn't improved from the original, it will be a visually stunning Goth-fest thingy. Erm. Does that make any sense?

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm told that the subtitled version of Vampire Hunter D is much better than the dubbed version (which didn't thrill me either) -- but who here is surprised about that?
------------------
