"Tanaka"?

Does anyone know what "Tanaka" means? Is it Rumy's last name?

It's her family name, yes.

Tanaka the first character "ta" means field, the second character "naka" means in the middle or within.

her first name Rumiko. "ru" to remain "mi" beautiful "ko" child

If you're still curious, I'll add that the kanji (Japanese characters) for her name are visible in the fourth framehere, along the left side of the sign ("Tanaka Rumiko").

So what you're saying is that her name means she remains a beautiful child outstanding in her field?

It's actually a very common family name in Japan. Tanaka was one of the first kanji words that I learned back in first year college level Japanese.

I'm aware of that. I'm just saying that I wouldn't put this word play past the writer, especially regarding a character named Rumiko.

I thought she was named Rumy after Rumiko Takahashi, writer of Ranma 1/2. Her sister (Akane) even has the same name as a Ranma character. Am I getting delusional in my old age, or is this the case?

I thought so too - which is why I am willing to believe the wordplay is intentional. After all, Ms. Takahashi herself can't resist puns in her names.

(Sakurambo - the mad monk Cherry, anyone? And then there's Ataru Moroboshi - who's family name, if I recall correctly, means something resembling "Stars Fall and Hit Him on the Head.")

Yep, T has been a big fan of takahashi's work. There's alot of instances of her work throughout fans.

He had previously said Rumi was named in honor of Takahashi.

Oh i love Takahashi's puns. Yes, Moroboshi Ataru meand to be hit by a fallen star. Mendou, although it is a name, can also mean trouble. The name Ran can mean orchid or war. It is a pity so much of the word play humor is lost in translation

This is why all the really good translations have footnotes or (in the case of videos) liner notes. Animeigo used to have great liner notes, but I don't know if they still have the old dedication.

In fact, I'm not even sure they're still in business. I haven't bought new anime in a while.

I agree that is what made the tapes from Animeigo so great. Really helped me understand several parts of Urusei Yatsura that I would have not understood
