Inner-Prized
I'm sure today's comic will spawn a huge debate here, so let me get in first:
I'm firmly on Rik's side on this issue. While it IS a little odd to have a trek series with -gasp- lyrics, I *love* the intro to Enterprized and, from what I've seen of it, it's a pretty good series.
And I'd pit Archer's dog against Picard's gold-fish, Sisko's baseball, and Kirk's tribble (what, you thought that was hair on top of his head?) any day.
(Considering how Janeway's pet is either Hairy Kim or Seven of Nine, depending on the time in series, I'm exempting her from the competition)

I am, without a single, solitary doubt, a Rikk.
Bakula's #4 on my list of Star Trek captains, behind Picard, Kirk, and Mackenzie, and even if the lyrical theme is a bit...unconventional...
Well, isn't that what Star Trek's about in the first place?
And I'm a Rikk with the cynic/optimist score as well...
------------------

I'd go with Rikk in general but at this point I'm Will with Trek. I've always been a SW fan though and I've been on defense so long I forget what that side of the court is like.
Anyway, I really like the different takes on the starships. It reminded me of the Starship Applepies. I think that was the one on Muppet Babies. It might have been Boobieprize though.....

I also liked the stellar glow of Pikard's head.
------------------

I believe that if the original series were remade today, a lot of the tech would look different. I respect the fact that the creators are keeping the rounded nacelles, the pistol grip weapons, and actual rocket torpedoes, but I also understand (and am willing to suspend disbelief enough) that there is going to be visual discrepencies. The only one I have issue with is the one I mentioned above.
This has been a Piichuu Rant

They've only shown the first three episodes on sky over here, but so far I'm not loving the intro. Just seems so wrong to have lyrics, and it's not as dramatic as the others. Still, the actual show (so far) has been better than the original series (I know there's gong to be lots of people shouting at me for that, but I never particularly liked it anyway).

I haven't seen the new series, but I can tell you for a fact that Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics for the original Star Trek series. And I can also tell you they are really really bad.
I don't remember the whole thing, but for the truly curious I can find where they are published (my brother has the book they appear in - it was written in the middle of season 2)
It starts out:
"Beyond the rim of starlight
my love is wandering in star-flight
I know he'll find in star clustered reaches,
Love, the love a star woman teaches"
It just gets worse from there.

I've found the Enterprise theme song to be like the show itself: better than I expected.
This probably says bad things about me, but I admit part of why I like the theme song is that I get joy out of thinking of all the people who make annoying loud noises about how awful it is having to sit through it every week and getting angry about it all over again.
Of course I still get the same joy out of R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People" even after all this time.
Though I also like the Enterprise theme because at least we get some words. The song isn't as cool as the voiceovers on TOS and TNG, but way better than the all music DS9 and Voyager themes.
(And all this from someone who swore after a few seasons of Voyager that he would never watch Trek again.)

Welcome, Vincegamer.
The full treatment:
Beyond
the rim of starlight
My love
is wand'ring in star-flight.
I know he'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love, strange love a star-woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.
I've GOT to wonder what it was like to be married to this guy.

I have to say, I started out like Will. Now I'm Rikk (to the point of having downloaded the old ROd Stewart version of the song). And here's why:
The theme of Enterprise is that it's before the space faring days, everything's an adventure, we know what the hell we're doing and all that. THis is when everything's new. We still have points of boring inactivity where we just can't learn anymore (After all, there are very few children on this Enterprise). To me, a theme song with lyrics (let alone those lyrics) is completely appropriate. Even though I did go "Oh my GOD" when I first heard it.
(Spoiler alert - Just in case you haven't seen the series premiere)
If I have one complaint, it's that there are continuity errors. I'm not talking about the "old" tech looking 50 times newer than the "newer" tech of ST:TOS. I'm talking about the ridgey foreheads on Klingons. They went to the trouble of explaining why there WEREN'T ridgey for the DS9 episode (well, maybe not explain, but it was noticed and acknowledged), why make them ridgey this time?
Ah well. All in all, I like the series.
------------------
A ghost is an hallucination of some famous regret, no more. Ghosts are mistakes that we've made. They come not from beyond the pale, but rise up from our gravest doubts about ourselves. Each ill-considered thing that we have done is a ghost that haunts us. If we let it. Regret is for the foolish, the weak, the tormented. Kill it before it bleeds you dry...
- LaCroix, "Forever Knight"
There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good
sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours much more.
