Alrighty, then. I just saw the entire series (just the TV eps, not the movies).
And, as you can guess, I am in one royally flarked-up headspace.
But, thats besides the point.
My question is, what the hell was that??? I figured out the whole Instrumentality thing (nevermind HOW or WHY, just the what). But what in the name of the 10,000 names of god happened to the Angels? Why wasn't that Adam, what was the deal with the 5th Child, what was SEELE actually trying to do, HOW did Gendo pull the Intrumentality out of his ass, and so on.
Help?

Whoah, whoah! Easy on the spoilers, 'jin!! Not everyone has seen the series! That said, there's already been a few Evangelion discussions on the board ( <A HREF="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/Forum16 ... 00250.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.keenspace.com/forums/Forum16 ... 50.html</A> ), and the general consensus seems to be: 'Love it or hate it, that sucker is pretty wacked.' Just to let you know, the 'ending' you watched wasn't the orignally intended ending to the show. The 'REAL' ending (in the form of the two movies) was much, much worse. <P>I'm sorry to say that there isn't much that'll help you through your confusion because the ending is.. basically.. the product of too little time and money. Everything had to be resolved in the space of about two epsidoes. Never a good thing. I'd suggest that you head online and search out some good spoiler pages (your best bet for a starting point is probably <A HREF="http://www.evangelion.com/" TARGET=_blank>http://www.evangelion.com/</A> )<P>-Wish

Yup, it's messed up allright.<P>I showed Eva to some of my friends and one of them, my friend Mark, only caught a couple of eps so I explained the last tape he saw by saying "...And this is the tape where the writer stopped taking his medication. By the time the ending rolls around the effect of the medication has worn offentirely."<P>We joke about that sometimes when things get really messed up. Like in Silent Hill, when we see the dead character talking again we go "And here's where the game designer stopped taking his medication."<P>Of course, that is just a rumor about the meds. I still haven't seen the movies because as confusing as the show is in English I don't want to experience it WITHOUT subtitles! Anyone know of a fan sub I could download or something?<P>------------------

In a sorta related note, I just got a CPM value pack of Nadesico comics. I get to reading these and begin saying to myself, "the TV show isn't like this at all..."<P>But then again, I haven't seen all that much of this show translated--only three episodes, of which two were my favorites.

Take Evangelion 25 and 26.<P>Replace every occurance of Shinji with Hideki Anno, the writer.<P>Replace every occurance of 'piloting Evangelion' with 'writing Evangelion'.<P>There's a lot of self-introspection in those episdes for the main writer, who wrote Evangelion after a stay in a mental hospital following a massive breakdown.<P>(There's a reason why a number of my online RPG friends refer to some people as having Evangelion Pilot Syndrome. AKA 'We're All Fooked In The Head'-itis.)

Evangelion was a much more personal project for Anno than a lot of people realize. He essentially put himself into the project, and not just to the extent that Gendo physically resembles him. It goes to the point that there's a rumor he took himself off of his anti-depressent medication as the series was made.

yeah Anno-sensei is a bit... uh... disturbed... it makes no senes, and it's a bit overrated.... at first it seemed like a cool parody of Gundum and other mech anime, but... it's just weird I own half the series... I've only watched it twice tho...<P>RebLaw

More sense? I don't know. We're getting into the Amaterasu/Susano'O stuff that Shirow's "Orion" went through. Part of it looks like a remake of "Outlanders" and of "Macross II" (both mangas, not necessarily the animes) simultaneously, with a little Miyazaki and Matsumoto imagery thrown in for good measure. Was Asamiya trying to parody everybody at once?

I dunno man, I stopped taking my antidepressent medication quite a while ago, and I could never come up with anything as screwed up on all levels as Eva was. Although I'd certainly love it if I could come up with something that could get so overrated.

Yeah, Viz puts that one out. According to their site, five graphic novels have been released and the sixth one is pending. The series ran 35 regular comic issues. They printed the comics in two versions...the alternate "Collectors" version was presented in its right-to-left Japanese form, translated but retaining the Japanese sound FX graphics.

Okay, before I sink ANOTHER $200 into Evangelion, and earn mega-class Otaku bragging rights, tell me. Will the manga series tell me:
1. Angels, where from, why, who, and so on.
2. Intstrumentality, How, why.
3. SELLE, why.
4. Mr. Nagitsa, nuff said.

Uhhh......... yeah.........sure it will....... We just won't tell you about all the NEW questions it raises! Mwahahahaha!<P>*ahem*
Actually I dunno how many questions it answers. I just know that all the stuff we had guesses about in the TV episodes were explain quickly in the manga.
