I've been having some real problems naming some of my side characters, so I'm turning to my tiny little audience for suggestions. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/wink.gif"> You can post them in this forum, or send e-mail to me at shiro@zensearch.net. If you offer me a pretty good name for any of these characters, I'll write "Thanks to (your name here) for (character's name)'s name" on the bottom of the first page he's mentioned on. Not only will it show up on the Internet, but if I'm real famous someday (yeah, like that'll ever happen) the credit will be written on the original page when it's printed.Here are the creatures I can't think of names for.1.) The lion-like one in the library, who sits on the top of the shelf.2.) The two gargoyles in the kitchen, who appear on November 29. They're going to be the comic relief.3.) The big baddie, the one who exists now as a menacing voice and a big orange eyeball. I was toying with calling him Leviathan, but I'm really trying to avoid biblical themes. (You'll see why later.)

The one I'm REALLY having problems with is the big bad guy. In the original short story that Ancient Messages is based off, I named him Thunderstorm... but you gotta understand that I was 12. I wish there was a giant database of villain names, so I wouldn't be stuck like this.

Heya,Well, a good 'cheat' can be naming someone in a different language. For instance ... you could always call him 'Thunder' in Gaelic, which translates as Tairneanach, or 'the Thunder' which is an Tairneanach. Or into french, where thunderstorm translates as orage. (but that's too close to orange in MHO ...) Other than that ...

Evil: Olc, an uilc (the Evil)
Enemy: (an) NaimhThese are just a few ideas to toss around, though.*G* As for a name database, I can sympathise. I put in HOURS looking through those baby namers for a name that meant 'liar' or 'deceitful' for a short story I was writing, and I came up with squat.Yvonne

Hmm, "Bob" for a villian's been done, actually, lots of villians have that name, especially in anything with humour, eg, earthworm jim, bob the bent-on-world-domination goldfish (easiest boss ever).i liked the gaelic (did i spell that right? sorry if no) name ideas, it is a good "cheat".i haven't been really helpful... i just wanted to be visible as an anciant messages reader ^^keep up the good work!

You could name him after someone who really, really annoys you. I do that all the time. I don't know, it might be kind of funny to have a demon with a mild-mannered name like "Bob" or something. Most people wouldn't think an ordinary name would really work, but just look at "Nightmare on Elm Street": it had a villain named "Fred." (Incidentally, Freddie Krueger was the name of some kid who used to beat up the director, so there you have it.)

Like Q'aru'otkar'ath-neel.------------------

I'm impressed. How did you guys know that one of the most irritating people I know is named Bob?In other news, I found a name for the lion-beast in a very old book of baby names. And I'm using one of the suggestions for the big enemy's name, so the only names left are the ones for the comic relief, if anyone's got any suggestions...

I heard somewhere that the moviemakers did that on purpose because they thought it'd be funny to have this girl getting chased around by a knife-wielding maniac.
