Any surreal cartoonists out there wanna crossover?...

Postby [AOD] on Sat Apr 17, 2004 8:25 am

I know my drawings are crappy, my comic page looks crappy, and the jokes often make no sense, but would any other surreal-webcomic-drawing cartoonists want to possibly do a crossover wiff me? Will anyone stoop to my level? WILL THEY ALLOW MY HORRIFYINGLY PSYCHOTIC AND BADLY-DRAWN CHARACTERS TO INVADE THEIR PRISTINE WORLDS??!?!

What do you mean? You mean there's more than one kind of crossover? Can you tell me what kinds there are? I'm kind of new at this whole business...

well, I'm not exactly a "surreal" cartoonist, but if you want to do a bit of a crossover with Pimpette... sounds like fun :D

Lemme know when you wanna do it, and we'll work out some kind of crossover plot or whatever

Well I've got updates stockpiled up till about the beginning of May. That means it might be a while - but then - that's a long while to plot out the thing, eh? Logically, with my storyline, pretty much any random thing could happen for very little reason at all, so that'll be an easy thing, but what about yours?

well I don't really have anything going on right now.
introducing a new character, but that will only take about a week more, seeing how often I update... heh

So yeah... Pimpette and/or anyone else should be willing to "accidentally" traverse random dimensions, or have unexpected visitors, etc etc

Think I'm gonna go read your archives again, see what I can come upwith
Any ideas are welcome, of course! :D

Okay, that sounds good enough to me. I've finished up some minor storytelling and I'm pretty much set for anything to happen. I hope you don't mind my wierd art style and (often) badly-drawn comics.

I'll have to read thru your archives too, I guess, to get a feel for your comic and such...

EDIT: I think it'd be cool if we described some of the background of our comics...

It's the End of the World is about precisely that. Someone screwwwwwwwwed up big time, allowing a time-slip to cause numerous universes to intersect. The universal bureaucracy, fraught with factions rivaling for power (at the moment... the uh... 'demons' against an entity known as the 'Cartoonist', who resembles the Architect in "The Matrix Reloaded"), deploys groups of unique individuals in hunting one another down to prevent the time-lines from intersecting and causing the end of the world.

And you?...

EDIT No. 2: Your website design skills are GODLY compared to my excrable page. For Zod's sake you have MORE THAN ONE PAGE! And IMaGEy-bUtt0ns!

Describing backgrounds sounds like fun... Might be good to think up reasons for a giant skinny Frog walking around freaking everyone out :wink:

Maybe we could have your hunters tracking Frog or something.

Pimpette doesn't really have an overall storyline. I'm currently working on a sort-of-separate comic about Pimpette's personal past, but (aside from Jon and Turkish) none of my other characters really have a past.

I got no problem with your style :D
It's really busy, which is interesting....if that makes any sense.

Okay, the way I have it set up is that a bunch of Universes are beginning to merge (that'll be the May 6th strip). That'll give me excuse enough to suddenly drop one of your characters in...

Maybe Pimpette herself? Or the Frog? Or maybe both? What do you think?

And perhaps there could be someone from mine, ending up in your world? I don't know... whatever you please is fine. At the moment there are three groups, per se, the hillbillies in their van and 'Angelina Guttersnipe', the group that you meet first, and the little girl in the mech and her 'friends'...

Well lessee... there are these "Correction teams" being sent to all the merging universes to fix things and make the evil blowy-up thing not happen. People in black suits, usually in groups of three. Perhaps they could suddenly show up at Pimpette's club or something and start poking around? Hmm...

I wonder how you do a crossover page anyway? How do you edit individual archive pages?...

Heh... I like where this is going.
There are a bunch of my characters that don't really make sense in the real world. Maybe the team could show up and decide that any of the not-so-normal ones need to be, um, "fixed." :wink:

I don't think you *can* edit individual archive pages. If you really want people to always know that this is a crossover, you can add a bit of text in the image itself.
What I do if I want to put a note in a particular page is upload a text file and name it the same as the image, but with the letter "a" at the end (ex. 20040430a.txt) and upload it into the comics folder at the same time as the comic. It'll end up displaying the text file as html.

Oh yeah. And how do you want to do this?
If your characters come nosing into Pimpette's club, then we'll both have to do comics (because I can't let you have all the fun :wink:)
If it's going to be more than one, should we take turns drawing the comics? Like, you do one, then I do the next, etc - but we decide beforehand exactly what's happening?

...Wow I talk a lot.

Well of course, that's the idea behind a crossover, isn't it? Both artists draw stuff?

Taking turns would be a good idea. I'd like that. We'd really have to work out exactly what was happening, however. Should this be a scripted kind of thing? I bet we could work out a workable script. If it's a more 'gut instinct', 'stream-o-consciousness' kind of thing (the way I drew most of my cartoon), we could just work out the general outline.

Heh... I like where this is going.

Like that frog? And that little demon-goth-vampire-dude? And that ... er... leprechaun? Heehehh... I like that idea, Pimpette, I do very much like it.

I think maybe we should stick with a 'general outline' type of thing. So we know what we're doing for a storyline, but each of us has our own script for each comic.

Yeah. Frog, Speed, Frankie(leprechaun). They're definitely of the category "one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-other"
Heh.

Yeah well I... um... dammit.

Including links to each others comics and keeping them with your comics is easy enough. I haven't looked into an official method or anything, but conceptually it's easy.

Autokeen lets you include text with the comic by uploading pages with the same date. For example,

20040503.jpg <-- comic
20040503.txt <-- the rant below the comic.

The text file shows up below the comic image because the files are listed in alphabetical order. To include text above the comic you could do this:

20040503a.txt <-- crossover title, link or rant.
20040503b.jpg <-- comic
20040503c.txt <-- rant text to be displayed below the comic.

Now, to link the crossover pages in your archive, include a link in one of our rant text pages.

For example, if AOD went first, then Pimpette, each would create a 20040503a.txt as below.

On Pimpette's site:
Code: Select all
<img src="/images/crossover_title.jpg" style="..." alt="Our Crossover" />
<br />
<a href="http://aod.keenspace.com/d/20040503.html">READ THIS FIRST</a>

On AOD's site
Code: Select all
<img src="/images/crossover_title.jpg" style="..." alt="Our Crossover" />
<br />
<a href="http://pimpette.keenspace.com/d/20040503.html">GO HERE NEXT</a>

The links point to your archive pages so the crossover will stay linked for as long as you both have Keenspace accounts.

Hope this helps.

I don't remember it - I wasn't into webcomics back then, and the link in Damonk's archive is broken. Shame - I wanted to read that!
