Really? I thought is was a much older song, sung by groups such as the Kingston Trio or Peter, Paul and Mary.

When I was just a lad of ten, my father said to me,
Come here and learn a lesson from the lovely lemon tree.
Dont put your faith in love, my boy, my father said to me,
I fear youll find that love is like the lovely lemon tree.

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.

Beneath the lemon tree one day, my love and I did a lie
A girl so sweet that when she smiled the sun rose in the sky.
We passed that summer lost in love beneath the lemon tree
The music of her laughter hid my fathers words from me:

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.

One day she left without a word. she took away the sun.
And in the dark she left behind, I knew what she had done.
Shed left me for another, its a common tale but true.
A sadder man but wiser now I sing these words to you:

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.

Ah, THAT song. I've heard it a few times before but never paid attention to the lyrics or title.

So I have a quibble with these lyrics: I happen to like eating lemons. :D That sorta ruins the whole analogy for me. ('Course, I found the conclusion problematic, in any case... not entirely without a point, and yet just off - or maybe potentially off - enough to bug me.)

I can see how the Fool's Garden song fits Ben in the beginning, though. Very interesting. I'm not sure I entirely get the song (for the most part I do; I just don't see... why they used the image of a lemon tree, or how the use of that image, that kind of tree, connects to the point of the song), but it's still interesting.
“The mirror may tell us what we are; memory may tell us what we were; but only the imagination can tell us what we might be.” – Donald Keesey

“You go whistling in the dark/ Making light of it/ Making light of it/ And I follow with my heart/ Laughing all the way// Oh 'cause you move me/ You get me dancing and you make me sing/ You move me/ Now I'm taking delight/ In every little thing/ How you move me”
~ "You Move Me"

I thought it was obvious:

The problem with a lemon tree is that it gives you nothing but lemons. Think metaphorically: The "tree" is a decision tree; a path of choices. But at the end of every branch is a "lemon".

"I wonder how.
I wonder why.
Yesterday you
Told me 'bout the
Blue, blue sky.
And all that I can see
Is just a yellow lemon tree.

I'm turnin' my head
Up and down.
I'm turnin', turnin',
Turnin', turnin',
Turnin' around,
But all that I can see
Is just another lemon tree."

P.S.: The band's official site has a video of the song, but it's a cheap tape of their concert in '05. Unless you have to check it out at http://www.foolsgarden.de/ as a Fools' Garden fan, don't bother.

Yours truly,

The musical,

Wanderer

Ah, that explains it.

I've never heard the Fool's Garden version, but was familiar with the older song. I hadn't paid much attention either way, but it's nice to know.

In the octopus' garden in the shade, by penny lane, down from the dock where the yellow subs now reside with a couple just wanting to hold hands!

I may need a little help to figure this out or it is going to be a hard day's night for me. Maybe I should crawl off to sleep in the bath.....

Hey Jude, just let it be, or you'll be trying to think it out eight days a week, and even Lady Madonna won't be able to give you a ticket to ride that train.
