There's an easy way to discourage this - make it cost ineffective. (That many drinks costs more than you'll find on them.)

Besides, the tavern staff won't be joining them. :roll:

Y'know, that's actually an option in the computer version of Temple of Elemental Evil... join the drinking contest and you get to loot everybody who drank themselves under the table before your leader passed out himself.

I just don't get why entering meant my paladin had transgressed. Who says a LG can't tie one on, especially if he's doing it because the party desperately needs the cash that goes to the winner?

Mostly because not everyone likes that bad a pun in the character name. I mean, "Mortal Wombat"? "Dalai Llama"? "Boom Orang"?

That would be because Gygax based the ideas of Cleric and Paladin mostly (and heavily) on legends of great Christian clerics and paladins. Since that would mean the paladin effectively has a vow of Temperance, entering a drinking contest is right out.

When the Solidus Corp. takes over, this DM shall be barred from practicing his trade. Honestly, firepower is never a bad thing... unless it's pointed at you, and the enemy has his finger on the button. That's when you pray for good air support.

Hmm... I think that nuclear platform is in orbit... I need to check before we invade Russia...
