Correct me if I am mis-remembering my culinary science, but muffins COULD theoretically be made as minature bread peices, heavy on the sugar and chocolate (or whatever). As such they would require yeast... and especially in primative cultures yeast must be kept in an active culture (don't know what the term for my contrasting uses of the word 'culture is here, but I do think it a seridipidous(sp?) bit of verbage). In such a case a 'stud muffin' would be a muffins worth of dough, perhaps even stored in a muffin pan by itself, that is not cooked, but is rather it (or a pinch of it) is worked in with the next batch of muffin dough to levin it.
