M'dear....do you know where that exchange and "Joshua" is from?

Not a clue.
I figured that "Joshua" was from something, but not the latter part.
Still, even if it weren't a reference to something, it wouldn't surprise me.

A computer is given the role of analyzing the prospects of a full-out nuclear attack on the USSR. It does the role rather like a chess match, and that is what it says at the beginning of the "game." If the operator would like to play his thermo-nuclear chess game. Well, obviously soemthing goes wrong, and somehow the computer takes control of all nuclear options in the United States arsenal, and simulates an attack. AT first it appears as though the computer DID actually attack, but it is instead simluating what would happen if the U.S. did launch an unwarned nuclear attack on the USSR. After the final terrible simulated outcome, the computer simulates if the USSR attacked first. Then China, then Japan and so on. When the computer has analyzed ever possible solution for the war and figured put there is no winner, it stands down. The last thing it does before the end of the movie is say "A game with no winners is a terrible game," or something equally cheezy yot poinent.

Oh - now that you describe it, I've seen this movie, or parts of it at least. It's been a while, though...

Yeah, that's true.

Tic Tac Toe is only a "nobody wins" scenario when both opponents are equally matched and even more so the higher up in skill they are.
don't believe me, I made a chart to map out most offensive strategies. those that work, those that don't work, and a map out of most defensive strategies.
Of course I believe you....you're just the kind of nerd that would figure out and chart something like that. heh heh heh
But, Matthew Brodricks character, with the help of Dr. Steven Falkin, "Joshua's" creator, got the computer to play itself ("number of players, 'zero'") in tic-tac-toe.....you can't get a better match of opponents. Joshua played every conceivable stratgy in both t-t-t and GTW and conluded that under optimal conditions it was a no-win scenerio in both games.

I think I saw that movie, was it one where there was this computer that two kids accidentally tried playing war games on and didn't know they were doing it for real?
I saw something like that, at the time I agreed that tic tac toe could end in a draw-all. personally though if the computer is dumb at tic-tac-toe it may very well conclude that not only is victory possible but is in fact inevetible. I once had to teach some of the younger (4, 5, 6 years old) kids in a small religious class at church, they liked tictactoe, but hadn't a clue how to play it.
I shall never forget them calling out "Middle-Middle!" when they wanted to make their move, despite having moved there on their previous move already.
Well... on glasses end I have no choice... at the ripe young age of 20-ish I require bi-focals... and would have the if I did not also require a corrective prisim for the left eye. Which leaves me with the fun position of needing glasses to read.. and glasses to see other stuff further away. Needles to say I am a blind geek/nerd girl in the bottom rungs of the foodchain (according to the chart). Hmm... maybe I should make a Flying fox Avatar?

So what? None of us care here. We're all nerds & geeks here...heck, I'm on both extreme sides of the chart....a RenFair SCAdian and a Trekkie!!
Let ya in on a little secret....nerds & geeks are some of the smarter folks in this here realm...with much better imaginations..sure we're off-beat and non-mainstream....who the heck says we have to be? Let the other dweebs conform to "normalcy", we march to a slightly different drumbeat. That is true individuality.
And don't change your avatar.....it's adorable.

my glasses (I don't even know where they are now it's been so long since I wore them) are copper wire frame. actually I don't think I really need them anymore. I was diagnosed with slight nearsightedness in the left eye. that's it. why do I not want to be called a nerd? cause I don't think I'm smart enough. let me do something that I copnsider smart and maybe I'll consider myself a nerd.
as far as that chart is concerned, I'm afraid I'm all over it. though anything erotic I don't fit in to. the geekiest I get on that chart is being a pokemon fan over 6 (sheesh I'm a pokemon fan over 16!) and I am over 13 and still a gamer.

OK....if you say so....but I've just been yankin' yer tail........an' callin' you the "right kinda nerd" was truely meant as a tongue-in-cheek compliment. And don't put yourself down......this ain't Mensa....there's no "smart quotient" requirment here to be considered either a nerd or a geek. We're mostly furs here.....and that's a whole different level.
Take it from this old wolf.....kid, I've been from one end of this galaxy to the other....seen a lotta strange stuff...and I haven't seen anythi.....*oops....wrong speech....sorry Capt. Solo* I mean that I've been around quite a while, and trust me, in some situations I totally qualify as a nerdy geek, and in others a geeky nerd......and I'll wear both badges proudly.

And rather widely separated time periods at that!
I don't live in multiple time periods; I just live in my own little world. Makes things so much simpler...
