But she's right. Too many parents try to do all their parenting before 5 and after 13, leaving out a HUGE chunk.

Actually, Lily just did extremely well. She just got Penny to discuss what was really bothering her. Now Lily can talk to their mom about what is going on here. And our author here reminds us that there are in fact two sides to a story. Yes, Lily's mom has some reasons to worry about Penny. And from Penny's vantage, she has some legitimate reasons to complain about their mother.
From the sound of it, Penny's mom took Penny for granted for too many years. Took it for granted that whenever she wanted to spend time with Penny, she could have Penny's attention. And took it for granted it wasn't any big deal to blow off her daughter when she was too busy. And like all moms, she got a sense of control from Penny wanting her mother's attention.
Then one day Penny stopped talking to her mom, stopped wanting her mom's attention. All of a sudden her mom suddenly feels like she's lost leverage with her daughter. And for that matter, adolescents are not children. Neither are they adults, they are an uneasy mixture of adult and child traits along with a few other things. Penny's mom is probably trying to order Penny around like a child and Penny isn't taking any of it.
And of course if Penny isn't going to her mom for attention, there's a fear that old gramps may be filling the gap. Not too likely, but Penny's mom is all of a sudden starting to notice her daughter for probably the first time in years and isn't liking what she sees. From Penny's vantage, she's been here all this time. Her mom could have paid attention at any time, established communication and trust and failed to and now she wants to make up for all the lost years like they never happened.
In the end, Lily has the unenviable task of telling her mom that she made some mistakes with Penny and she's going to have to start working on building a relationship with Penny from scratch. Penny is going to have to work on matters from her end as well, but in the end they're going to have to give up an adult/child relationship and work on an adult/adult relationship here. Not that Penny is an adult, but she's going to be one in due time. Penny's mom is going to have to deal with that.

Hmm... Even my skeptical, devil's-advocate mind can't find anything wrong with either Penny's rant or Mutant for Hire's interpretation. Bravo!

Don't you dare touch, gas, drug or therapy away that wonderful intelligent perceptive creative mind of hers! That girl is a gem. An intellectual and creative jewel. I can only dream of what she'll accomplish in a few years time.
