You know, I scared to hazard a guess to which people are generating these noises. Is it the posse or
Ben and Lily? I think I am going to have to agree with her friends.
. I think she'll figure the posse out sooner or later.

That's one reaction; a couple others are if you're a voyeur or depressed

In truth it wouldn't be that unlikely for Penny to hear everything that is going on. A house that old would have convection heating (think honking big furnace with a spiderweb of ducts coming out of it) and have vents into the other rooms for circulation.
