Yeah, I didn't think the plot was right. Weren't doing the normal thing in video games now where they were trying to develop teleporting or something? Also, if they are going even close to the game, everyone dies. EVERYONE.

Yeah....pretty much along the lines of Vin Diesel in "xXx" near the end when he tells the cop:

"Stop thinking 'Prague Police'...start thinking 'Play Station'......blow sh*t up!!!"

One of the best lines in the whole flic.

Sort of....you have to read the instruction manuel. Basically, if memory serves, something goes wrong on some research base on Mars (opening a portal to Hell), they send in the military. An entire squad goes in but an communication officer stays behind, overhearing the utter slaughter of the squad. He has to go in and deal with the problem.

That might make a good game, but my plan would have been to nuke the entire planet from orbit.
Which would have been very pretty to see, but would have made a very short game...

Knowing our luck, it would be government funded too.

:o Your tax dollars opening the gates of hell. Scary thought.

'Course, some might argue they do that everyday at a satanic place called the IRS...

Unless your scientists have a religious bent in which they see themselves of servitors of God ushering in the apocalypse so that the good of humanity can transend this world of sin while every one else ends up as demon munchies.

And depending on the project, might not have solved the problem. If it was something that "held the door open", then yes, it would have fixed things. If it was something that had to "close the door", it wouldn't, and might have made things wose. (I'm afraid I was never good / interested enough to play Doom to the end.)

It's a western idea: regeneration through destruction. In a nutshell, most westerners believe that in order to have a solution, all you have to do is destroy or eliminate the problem. Then the solution will naturally occur. It's a common theme in greek, roman, and norse literature. Contemptorary orgins are westerns started the trend (once the bad guys were killed then the town/ ranch/ family would be saved.) and it carried through into most masculine action movies (once the archvillain is killed then the story is over.)

In contrast Dramas and romantics (which rarely depend upon the death of antagonists), anime, and other foreign films rarely employ regeneration through destruction. It is a heavily lodged theme in the American Psyche though.

"Where else can you find it... hmmm..."

How true, that's what we should have done, to heck with the marines. Drop auditors into the hell portal. Not even Satan could withstand that.

Well, to be honest, Somber, the reason most Western civilizations believe in this is because it tends to be pretty damn well effective. If you kill or eliminate the troublemaker (death is one option; there are others, some of which are worse), then it's easier to rebuild and move on. If you leave them alone, they tend to make things harder than they have to be.

And frankly, some villians and troublemakers cannot be reformed. Western civilizations are influenced by Christianity, and there's a predominant belief that some things/people are too evil and must be eliminated for the common good.

Bad guys don't always have to die, but you have to admit, very few who are killed show up to make trouble again.

btw, I suggest that if you find yourself in a sci-fi or fantasy adventure that you make sure you have a body and a head, together but separate, before you declare someone dead.

Just a precaution...

I've actually played a small part of the beginning of DOOMIII.

the plot really doesn't get cooking until after you meet this guy (who dies of course) that says he made the devil's cage.

overall, I found it as difficult to survive as HALO Legendary mode and as BOO (something is tough and slaps you dead from behind making you jump in your seat or you see something that makes you wish the char had just stayed in bead this morning or otherwise just makes you go "oh, no") saying as Halflife

still I prefered HALO and Halflife to DOOMIII. it just isn't my style of killing, no innocent people to frag...

Well yeah, this is very true. When I go to the movies I want to see the villain get what is comming to him/her, I don't want to see the rapist/murdered/kidnapper/terrorist arrested and taken off to jail to serve their time. I want to see them get taken out. I like to cheer when the baddie dies. It gives a much better sense of satisfaction.
