I was in a similar situation when I had my first paying job, although I don't think the dues were that high. Still, I realized that if I worked even a single hour in a month, I had to pay full dues - which took a few hours to earn.

I was in a closed shop, so there was no choice about joining the union. But I was also "seasonal help", which meant I was part-time (35 hours a week instead of 40) and would be fired every 3 months when the season changed.

That sounds a lot like what the manger says in this comic.

*drops dead of a heartattack*
You mean the Marxist dream of the Union looks out for you is a lie?? That all they want to do is line their own pockets with your money?
Heh, and people wonder why I hate Unions and all that they stand for. And let us not forget the Union hall that was built by non-union labor.
Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.

That's why I'm SOOOO GLAD that Florida is a "Right To Work" state.
